A major car manufacturer recently said, “Decarbonization will only work if we come together and then jointly bring sustainable ideas to life.”
The innovative collaboration between Woco Group, Mercedes-Benz AG, and TRS - Tyre Recycling Solutions SA led to the development of a locking disc for door damping and sealing, incorporating 15% TRS TyreXol™ rubber powder. This achievement was celebrated at the 22. SPE Automotive Award Night in Bonn, where it secured third place in the Body Interior category.
The joint effort exemplifies the commitment to accelerating the circular economy among car manufacturers, tier, and raw material suppliers. With the average vehicle currently using around 50 kg of rubber, the development of the sealing disc marks a significant step towards sustainability. Here's to hoping it sets the stage for greater industry advancements.

Big week for the Plastic Omnium teams: the company, founded 78 years ago by Pierre Burelle, is accelerating its overhaul with a new company name (OPmobility) to better reflect the variety of its technology and client base. The French car-parts maker has big plans for the US, Mexico and other foreign countries, as it seeks to reduce its reliance on Europe. Read below my interview with CEO Laurent Favre, a former ABB executive who took the helm of the company in early 2020, and Managing Director Felicie Burelle, the founder's grand-daughter, who played a big role in reshaping Plastic Omnium into what it is today - notably with the 2018 sale of the plastic bins business that had previously turned the group into a household name in #France (today France accounts for only 5% of group sales). Clients include auto manufacturers (Tesla, China's BYD, Renault Group etc) but also makers of makers of vans, trucks, trains (notably Alstom) and even airplane maker Airbus. The company will inaugurate a new plant in Austin, Texas next month (its 13th in the US) and more to come later.

🌿 Sustainability in Motion at ELSA Industry: Introducing a Formula Car Seat Made from Flax Fibers and Bio-Based Resin🌿
At ELSA Industry, we're not just talking about sustainability; we're actively integrating it into our projects with customers and partners. One of our latest projects with the UPB Drive Formula Student Team exemplifies this commitment: a high-performance formula car seat crafted from flax fibers and bio-based resin.
This innovative project not only showcases our commitment to sustainability at ELSA Industry but also highlights the potential of natural fibers and bio-based materials in the realm of composite manufacturing. We are setting new standards for eco-friendly manufacturing processes in the automotive sector. This innovative approach not only showcases our dedication to green manufacturing but also highlights the potential of natural fibers and bio-based resins in the composite manufacturing industry.
Why Flax Fibers?
- Renewable Resource: Flax is a naturally grown crop, making it a renewable resource that significantly reduces the environmental footprint of our products.
- Exceptional Strength and Stiffness: Despite their natural origin, flax fibers provide remarkable mechanical properties, including high strength and stiffness, which are essential for the demanding conditions of formula car racing.
- Vibration Damping: Flax fibers excel in absorbing vibrations, offering improved comfort and performance compared to traditional materials.
Why Bio-Based Resins?
- Reduced Carbon Footprint: By utilizing renewable bio-materials, bio-based resins help lower the carbon footprint of manufacturing processes.
- Lower Toxicity: Compared to traditional chemical resins, bio-based resins exhibit reduced toxicity during manufacturing, making them safer for the environment and our team.
- Superior Performance: Our bio-based resin formula maintains superior performance characteristics, ensuring that our formula car seat meets the rigorous standards required for racing applications.
A Real Alternative for Composite Manufacturing
The combination of flax fibers and bio-based resins represents a real alternative for composite manufacturing, aligning with our vision for a more sustainable future. This project not only demonstrates ELSA Industry's commitment to innovation and sustainability but also paves the way for wider adoption of these materials in various industries.
We're proud to lead by example, showing that it's possible to achieve high performance without compromising on environmental responsibility. The formula car seat project is just the beginning, and we're excited to explore further opportunities to integrate sustainable materials into our products.
