Primark launches annual #sustainability and #ethics report Today we discover that 55% of all Primark clothes sold in the last year contained #recycled or more #sustainably sourced materials up 10% on the year The commitment to halve carbon emissions across the value chain (doesn’t say supply chain because that would be an easy one to achieve!) by 50% by 2030 has been validated by Science Based Targets (??? - internal?). This has centred on store developments such as low carbon energy The biggie for ethics really is paying a fair living wage - we know after Dr Courtney Chrimes presentation ASBCI (Association of Suppliers to the British Clothing Industry) presentation that more than 51% of the #garment #workers on the planet are paid less than their living wage. These are the ones that are recorded! Primark says it’s working with the Fair Labour Assiciation Fair Compensation Toolkit! That’s a mouthful! Do not get me wrong! Any improvement is great news for the industry and our planet but come on Primark! This is the most embarrasing way to learn something 😅 At primark we have weekly meetings with our line managers in our departments. We walk around, like a client will, and we take decisions for the next week’s planning. 🗓 As we were discussing possible action plans for boosting our sales I noticed a really ugly hanging polo. And I told him: "I bet we don’t sell many of these, who wears this kind of product?" He laughed, and said to me: “I do, you should take a look at the figures” It was one of our best sellers. 🪙 After I got over the embarrasment and the shock that maybe I do not dress as well as I thought... I realized he gave me two important lessons: ✔️ I can’t let my personal taste affect the commercial decisions I take. ✔️ If I want to sell something, I have to look at what the market demands, not what I personally like I didn't expect to learn something this way, but it has been effective, I'm sure I won't forget it. Following a robust first half, in which Associated British Foods plc. witnessed 39% growth in profit, they were projecting huge growth in its full-year profit. That performance was driven mostly by strong margin recovery in both the Primark fashion retail business and food operations. This is only the beginning of the Primark outperformance story, with revenues up 7.5% at £4.5 billion and like-for-like sales growth of 2.1%. They see further success as new store openings continue and thus maintain sales growth. Furthermore, Primark has forecasted an improved adjusted operating margin of moderate nature in the second half, reflecting the better product costs and a reduction in the shipping cost. On the grocery side, the division continues robustly with brands such as Twinings, Jordans Dorset Ryvita, Kingsmill, and Ovaltine. In this area, too, a strong improvement in their profitability is expected. Strategic initiatives in place across their business units are paying off despite a soft consumer environment. As usual, Primark will be vigilant towards global market conditions, which now include monitoring the situation in the Red Sea but are not expected to experience serious disruptions. #BusinessGrowth #RetailSuccess
