🔦 Featured in our next XTC Startup Spotlight is Susan Payne, co-founder of Sustainable Planet, the 2023 World Food Forum Startup Innovation Award winner in the Better Nutrition category.    💨 Susan Payne doesn’t let the grass grow under her feet. Armed with a liberal arts degree, law degrees from McGill and Oxford universities and an MBA diploma from London School of Economics, she spent 25 years at top investment banks and hedge funds. Then she pivoted, leaving city life in London to become a “green” entrepreneur in Africa. In 2020, Susan and Sven Kaufmann co-founded Sustainable Planet, which grows water lentils. Unlike soybeans and other plant proteins, water lentils are a highly nutritional #superfood, containing all amino acids and multiple vitamins, including B12. Water lentils grow quickly year round and produce 10-15 times more protein per hectare using 15 times less water than soybeans. They have no allergens and use no chemicals to grow them. So, what’s Sustainable Planet’s “secret sauce?” There are many. 💚 Sustainable Planet addresses three major global problems: food security, climate change and agricultural regeneration. They engage subsistence farmers, dramatically increasing their incomes and nutrition. The company holds the IP to increase protein and nutrients across many different foods, including supplemental powder, protein bars and pasta. Geared 100% to climate change initiatives and sustainability, Sustainable Planet is the rare startup that addresses each of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. 🌱 The Green Business Building opportunity 🌍 Last week, I had the privilege of attending McKinsey & Company's Green Business Building Summit #GBB24 in Berlin, and it was nothing short of inspiring! The summit shed light on the immense potential of building green businesses and to drive positive change across industries, from mobility and buildings to energy and agriculture. What's even more exciting is the diversity of players involved – from startups and incumbents to investors and consultants – all coming together to build up new business and create sustainable solutions for our planet. One of the key takeaways from the summit was the emergence of new business models, particularly those rooted in the circular economy. It's clear that the traditional ways of doing business are evolving, and there's a growing emphasis on sustainability and environmental stewardship. Amidst the wealth of insights shared, two moments stood out to me personally: Witnessing my school friend Dr. Michael Müller pitch his startup, PFLANZENTHEKE GmbH, which offers an innovative system for vertical farming that addresses the risks of climate change for agriculture and significantly reduces the use of land and water. Michael's dedication to sustainable and climate resilient agriculture resonated with me deeply, and I'm convinced that his startup will flourish. Sampling burgers made with plant-based alternatives from The Seaweed Company and having the opportunity to meet their founder, Joost Wouters. His commitment to sustainable food solutions is both admirable and energizing. One of the recent tools to mitigate the impact of the global food system is Geographical Indications (GIs), an institutional (legal and political) tool promoted as preserving quality, heritage and fostering sustainability. Wow, I just got goose bumps reading this article about PROJECT EADEN by Green Queen Media. It's surreal to recognised by such a respected voice in the plant-based community what we have started. Their take on how realistic our meat is? Well, it's exactly what we've been aiming for these past three years. Rewind to 2022. We embarked on this moonshot project against all odds. Billions had already been poured into meat alternatives, with countless researchers dedicating decades to the cause. Yet, we weren't satisfied. The products out there? Not quite hitting the mark. But the urgency to tackle greenhouse gas emissions from meat production, especially cattle, was undeniable. Our mission was clear, and pretty ambitious: harness fiber technology to recreate ultra-realistic meat from sustainable proteins. No compromises. Scalable. Affordable. Because let's face it – only then can we convince the masses to shift from animal meat to options that are better for both people and our planet. Looking back, it seemed improbable. But isn't that the essence of entrepreneurship? That naivety that pushes you to start, despite the unknown challenges ahead. It takes a bit of obsession to convince yourself – and those early believers. Speaking of which, massive shout-out to our early backers: David from Magnetic Capital, Carl from Creandum, and Christophe and Patrick from FoodLabs. And to our first team members - Cian and Mimi. Thank you for believing in us and Project Eaden’s mission from the very beginning.
