The European Union and Norway signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Thursday to launch a strategic partnership on developing sustainable land-based raw materials and battery value chains. The partnership will facilitate joint investments and collaborations in the sector to bolster the European raw materials industry and render the two economies more resilient to supply chain disruptions. The signing of the MoU on Thursday was also accompanied by the EU’s Green Deal chief, Maroš Šefčovič, who also signed the strategic partnership, saying that the bloc will be “attentive to the developments of deep sea mining in Norway and also around the world,” adding that more critical mineral mining is needed to fuel the green and digital transition. #mining #norway #eu #criticalminerals #rawmaterials

In light of the recent article about U.S. lawmakers pushing for funding in deep-sea mining to lessen reliance on China for critical minerals, it's time we consider the Earth Responsibility Score (ERS) in our discussions. Deep-sea mining, while offering an alternative source of essential minerals for industries like EV batteries and weaponry, raises significant environmental concerns. The introduction of the Responsible Use of Seafloor Resources Act emphasizes the need for diversification in sourcing critical minerals but also highlights the environmental and social implications of such actions. As professionals, we must balance innovation and environmental stewardship. Let's advocate for comprehensive assessments of environmental impacts and promote responsible mining practices. #SustainableBusiness #DeepSeaMining #EnvironmentalImpact #Innovation #CriticalMinerals

Human Resources Director at South32 | Women in Mining Arizona President | WIOA LWD Board Member | Aspen Institute Fellow
Another exciting milestone for South32 and the South32 Hermosa project! Today, we’ve been awarded a $20 million investment into the Hermosa project from the United States Department of Defense’s Defense Production Act (DPA) Title III Battery Grant Program. Matched by an additional $43 million from South32, the combined $63 million investment will go towards accelerating the development of Hermosa’s battery-grade manganese deposit. Hermosa was the first critical minerals mining project added to the United States’ FAST-41 permitting process and is currently the only advanced mining project in the United States with the ability to produce battery-grade manganese. Once completed, the project will provide a reliable and stable domestic supply of a federally-designated critical mineral, helping put Arizona in the driver’s seat of America’s clean energy transition. https://lnkd.in/ehnXMV65 #south32 #criticalminerals

Eurooppa on risteyksessä - joko lisää kaivoksia tai lisää riippuvuuksia kolmansista maista: "Mining in Europe: A fundamental building block of the sustainable transition. Europe is at a critical junction, one with significant impacts on its ability to achieve its Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA) targets, key enablers of the twin sustainability and digital transition. One path leads to dependency, meaning abandoning Europe’s mining industry in favour of high imports, less Environmental Social Governance (ESG) compliance, low strategic autonomy and diminished resilience. The other path leads to embracing 20-30 new strategic mining projects in Europe by 2030. It leads to a sustainable and prosperous European mining industry which delivers on reinforced strategic autonomy, with ESG aligned with European values." #kriittisetmateriaalit #kaivosala #eurooppa https://lnkd.in/ezm_9qWd

Interesting insights on the future of copper and critical minerals in Arizona.
"Arizona holds extensive undiscovered critical mineral potential and is already a top US producer of copper. Expanding the federal definition of critical minerals to include copper would allow Arizona’s world-class copper operations to access mechanisms to accelerate responsible production. The state’s existing mining infrastructure can be adapted to support critical mineral extraction as well." Read more below:

🎉 Yesterday, 7 April 2024, marked the second anniversary of International Graphite trading on the ASX! 🎉 In these two years, we've achieved significant milestones on our journey to becoming one of Australia's first fully integrated mine-to-market graphite producers. We've focused on developing our Springdale Graphite Project and establishing downstream R&D processing facilities in Collie, with funding support from the Western Australian and Australian Federal Governments. Our efforts have resulted in over a three times increase in the Mineral Resource estimate for Springdale, earning it the recognition of Discovery of the Year in the 2023 Australian Mining Prospect Awards. Our Collie facilities now boast state-of-the-art graphite micronising and spheroidising equipment. We're also advancing studies for the Springdale mine and concentrator, the Collie battery anode project, and the Collie graphite micronising project. A big thank you to our consultants, contractors, advisors, and suppliers for their hard work and dedication over these two years. We also acknowledge the Western Australian Government, the Federal Government, and our landowners and communities in Hopetoun/ Ravensthorpe and Collie for their continued support. And to our shareholders, thank you for your ongoing support and confidence as we work towards our goal of being Western Australia’s first fully integrated mine-to-market supplier of battery anode materials. We are committed to developing our Springdale graphite resource and becoming one of the key graphite companies delivering advanced products to the international marketplace to help meet global decarbonisation goals. Here's to the next 24 months of growth and success! 🚀 https://lnkd.in/gsPcxzvX #criticalminerals #batteryanode #renewableenergy #ig6 #asx #madeinWA

This quote from the assistant deputy minister with Natural Resources Canada says it all: "“If you look at Canada, we have three electric vehicle battery factories. We need about 15 new mines coming into production by 2035 to meet supply and demand for those three factories,” he said. “Since 2005, we’ve only been able to open four critical mineral mines. So we have to do this five times faster than we did before. That’s $25 billion that’s needed to achieve those goals.” Need we say more?? #CriticalMinerals #Mining

I watched an ARTE documentary last night 'Greenland: Agriculture or Mining?', showing how the warming #arctic makes much-wanted minerals like nickel, gold, iron, zinc, uranium, etc more accessible. The local communities are facing pressure to allow mining, OR, take advantage of the milder #climate to scale up domestic agriculture. In the report, an Australian mining company is mentioned, with its eyes wide on uranium, which is opposed by many locals due to the likely environmental impact AND the fact that the mine would only provide jobs for 37 years. I researched the issue further today and discovered that the Chinese-linked Australian mining company 'Greenland Minerals A/S' has now actually sued the Greenland government, demanding either a mining license, or compensation of up to $11.5 billion for lost revenue. Arctic Business Journal reports: "In 2021, the government in Nuuk, Greenland’s capital, passed legislation to ban uranium mining in Greenland, and this summer Greenland Minerals was refused a mining license for its Kvanefjeld project at Kuannersuit mountain. The rare earths in the area are commingled with uranium, and mining would inevitably bring the latter to the surface, a result the Greenland’s government is determined to prevent." This is not an isolated case of powerful mining companies suing governments that choose planetary health and societal wellbeing over extractive mining for short term profits. These degenerative companies are the school-ground bullies on the global scale, responsible for ongoing destruction of our planet and subsequent impact on human health and wellbeing. Here's the article: https://lnkd.in/ehmH8Mg4 Here's the ARTE doco: https://lnkd.in/erNA6h5F
