This summer showed a significant increase in summer camp member retention! ☀️ According to the nonprofit community centers we support, 41% of kids returned to the same camp this summer. Camps are retaining more kids year over year. ⬆️ This surge in member retention highlights the importance camp experiences have on both students and families. It illustrates how summer camps have the ability to build a strong bond in the community and earn parents' trust with a secure environment for their children. In it for the kids! It’s been so exciting to lead the strategic planning process for the beloved St. James's Children's Center, in partnership with Executive Director Diahann Whittington and Board Chair Stacy Brinkley. This nonprofit early childhood education center has been a shining star in the early childhood space for years. Despite a strong culture and shared sense of the philosophy of the organization, there was no unifying Vision Statement to capture it. So we wrote one that captures both the current and long-term impact of the Children’s Center’s work: “Our work creates a more connected, compassionate and capable community, today and in the future.” (Side note: We’re particularly proud of the alliteration. 🤓) Through some thoughtful and meaningful discussions between the planning team, staff/teachers, board, and stakeholders in the community, the Children’s Center has crafted a plan that is both inspiring and achievable. The Goals and Strategies in the plan will lead to real benefits for children, families, and early childhood educators. But I don’t have to just watch from the sidelines, because I’ll be staying regularly engaged with Diahann as she quarterbacks the implementation of the plan. Thanks to everybody at the Children’s Center for your trust and enthusiasm for the process! #strategicplanning #nonprofit #earlychildhood #education #rva

The State of Black Boys' Literacy Rate According to Tyrone Howard, director of UCLA's Black Male Institute, the state of Black boys' literacy rate is influenced by multiple factors, including racial, economic, and gender gaps. Some of the factors that could limit black boys in reading include a higher likelihood of suspension and/or expulsion, leading to lost instructional time. Howard also points out that teachers often have lower expectations for Black boys. Young black boys are not given the same opportunities to participate and are often assumed to know less and be more troublesome and disruptive. He emphasizes that cultural, social, and personal relevance are all crucial if we want to help Black young boys." The state of Black boys literacy rate demands immediate attention, and PSCF is taking bold steps to address it. By building home libraries and offering a dynamic online summer reading program, we aim to empower children with the skills and passion for reading that will shape their futures. Your support is crucial in making this vision a reality. Together, let's create a brighter future for the next generation—one filled with the boundless possibilities that literacy affords. President & CEO, The OMNi Gardens (Homeschool) Land Development Firm | Home of the Homeschool Campus
The OMNi Project as a Community Nourishment Model: A New Approach to Funding The OMNi Project, inspired by the Community Nourishment Model, offers a fresh approach to nonprofit educational funding. The traditional grant system, fraught with stress and competition, often eclipsed the true needs of students. The OMNi Project advocates for stable partnerships with fiduciary institutions, introducing bridge loans as essential tools. Beyond just funding, it's a rallying cry. Acknowledging past missteps, it beckons for unity, weaving the principles of the Community Nourishment Model throughout. The focus? Nurturing, nourishing opportunities and a brighter educational future. 💫

During the pandemic, when many grantees were forced to operate in crisis mode, College Futures deliberately aimed to foster a sense of care, support, and community, paired with stable and flexible funding. This was the start of a new policy grantmaking strategy that eventually grew to an “ecosystem” of 16 organizations, intentionally designed to advance connections, knowledge, and movement-building across higher education equity. We offer insights to the philanthropic community to strengthen equity-focused movement-building and grantmaking, especially in support of statewide policy and systems change: https://buff.ly/3WzEjuK.
