🌟 Youth are the driving force of creativity and innovation in European Creative Industries, especially in reshaping the film industry! Their diverse perspectives need authentic spaces for expression and validation. How Can Film Schools Become More Diverse and Accessible in a Sustainable Way?
Next Thursday, we’re asking “How Can Film Schools Become More Diverse and Accessible in a Sustainable Way?” in our free public panel on Social Sustainability. Diversity and inclusion experts from Copenhagen, London, and Berlin will discuss their insights and findings from their universities: How do they define their roles? What opportunities and challenges do they see? As gatekeepers and door-openers, film schools can shape and actively change the future of the film scene on both a national and international level. But how can we guarantee that the issues of diversity, inclusion, and accessibility have not only temporarily come to the forefront, but are sustainably applied and integrated into the structures of film schools and consequently into those of the film industry? Fatih Abay (European Film Academy), Dee Kerai (London Film School) and Jakob Høgel (National Film School of Denmark) will be on the panel. Aida Begović (Diversity and Inclusion Strategy Coordinator) will moderate the discussion. In cooperation with the European Film Academy and Creative Europe Desks Deutschland Desk Munich | Creative Europe Desk KULTUR Thursday, November 16 3:30 – 5:00 pm Hochschule für Fernsehen und Film München (HFF München) Audimax Language: English All are welcome

IN GOD WE TRUST, ALL OTHERS MUST BRING DATA (INCLUDING YOU!) Its no new news that the entertainment industry is going through a massive pivot. The value chain is going from producer centric to creator/audience centric (kudos Doug Shapiro for outlining it very clearly). Streaming landscape is ultra competitive (as Evan Shapīro has pointed out in his recent excellent writings). Add European elections, economic pressures, conflicts and reverberations of COVID and SAG strikes. In this enviroment executives, ecosystem leaders, and policymakers (either straight in governments, film and media orgs or elswhere) have to make some tough decisions. And gut feeling does not help (always). Our colleagues Jakob Isak Nielsen, @Cathrin Bengesser, @Ivana Kostovska, Marius Øfsti & et al at CresCine have put together a remarkable dossier on the State of small European (film) markets. Its comprehensive, solid, interactive and easy to explore - a total must read for anyone in this business. Dive in, it will help you to make better decisions and bring you the data-> AC Coppens Manu Guddait, Tine Fischer, Edith Sepp, Rolandas Kvietkauskas Laimonas Ubavičius, Dita Rietuma, Ene Katrine Rasmussen, Roosa Toivonen, Ross Keane, Luís Chaby Vaz, Virginie Nouvelle Heidy Purga Karlo Funk Sarah Geeroms Ezra Eeman Sofie Hvitved Loïc De Visscher Anssi Komulainen Eleni Sharp, Rafaël Huybrechts, Ricardo Tomé, Wouter Quartier, Matthijs Wouter Knol.

"A great deal of cultural work needs to happen for the film industry to re-engage grown- up audiences. We need relevant, life-changing, and deeply entertaining titles; exciting festivals; immersive and moving exhibition experiences; inspiring popular education about the history and language of film; the nurturing of film coverage in other media, and so on. All stakeholders in the wider film ecosystem will need to work together, and if they do, there is low-hanging fruit to be plucked – most obviously, re-engaging people who are or have considered themselves film fans with the theatrical experience. That work must extend to the upcoming generations; it could even be argued that the only audience goal that truly matters for the industry long-term is making today’s kids and youth fall in love with cinema. It may take a decade, by which they will be film-loving adults; the investment in such an audience pipeline can continue to pay off as long as there are children. It is strange, therefore, that precisely these audience groups, the films made for them, the people who make them, and projects inspiring kids to engage with cinema have such low status within the film industry." - Johanna Koljonen in NoJSe Report 2024.

Oscar Bloomfield's #PhD #research explores how cinema can highlight the fundamental essences of the human condition which may have become lost to the frantic pace of modern life. Oscar is a PhD candidate at the School of #Communication and #Creative Arts at Deakin's Faculty of #Arts and #Education. 'In the future, I'm definitely excited to continue strengthening my own personal relationship with #cinema, and its philosophical particularities, and I'm definitely also looking at strengthening my understanding of how cinema taps into what it means to be human', says Oscar. That wraps up the 54th International Film Festival Rotterdam. It was another fantastic experience this year! Special thanks to Silvia Jaunsolo (lodging), Ottla, ¤ Xiang Tjoa ¤ Tjoa, Natasja Beckers, Ailton, and all our friends who made it happen! Eleni Koulouki, we missed you! After watching about 30 movies, here are my top picks for you: 1. "De wereld van Carlijn" - Ariane Green 2. "Guerilla des Farc, l'avenir a une histoire" - Pierre Catles 3. "The Night Visitors" - Michael Gitlin 4. "Veni Vidi Vici" - Daniel Hoesl, Julia Niemann 5. "Voy! Voy! Voy!" - Omar Hilal Review: 1. A critical take on our banking system, presented as an in-house production. A true artistic masterpiece. 2. A glimpse into how supporters become opponents, fighting for a 'normal' existence after government disappointment. 3. Captivating footage of hidden natural wonders filmed with microlenses. The colors, motifs, and filming techniques are breathtaking. 4. A portrayal of power, prestige, and universal suffering. Power is both bestowed and influenced by our surroundings, implicating us all. 5. An entertaining depiction of real-life events gone awry, showcasing human capability amidst chaos, regardless of consequences. Many films fit within these genres for me. If you'd like more recommendations, feel free to ask.

📣🆕ENC Analysis is out 👉🏽 “Film festivals and cities: A view for south-eastern Europe” by Dr. Eleni Sideri, ENC Academic Council Member and Assistant Professor at the Department of Balkan, Slavic & Oriental Studies of the University of Macedonia. In this ENC analysis, Dr. Sideri examines how film festivals in the southeastern European periphery contributed to the transformation of #Thessaloniki🇬🇷, #Sarajevo🇧🇦 and #Tbilisi🇬🇪 into regional film centers. The paper studies the ways film festivals, especially film markets, became a tool for cities to address economic and political challenges raised within the framework of #Europeanization 🇪🇺 but also, how the past through cultural memory seems to entangle with these changes and become an important factor for the transformation of these cities.
