We’re proud to have supported the development of the UK’s first #CommercialTimberGuidebook, which has been launched today. The guide, which aims to promote the use of structural #timber in commercial #construction, represents a key step toward broader adoption of #sustainable timber construction. It aims to drive the adoption of timber by demonstrating both its technical viability and its insurability. We helped shape the guidebook, sharing our knowledge and learnings from our plans to deliver a timber frame market hall and workplace, as part of our ECF partnership’s St Helens town centre #regeneration. ICYMI, Amherst’s own David Schwarz spoke to Sarah Al-Shaikh, M.S. from KXAN about our new community, named Firefly, and how we’re contributing to much needed housing in Texas with our modular construction capability, StudioBuilt. David explains how StudioBuilt’s modular construction process works and outlines the many benefits of this homebuilding process, including the ability to build a home about 50% faster than traditional homes, and the removal of barriers like weather, trade delays and supply chain issues. Housing represents almost 2/3 off our housing community and demand for urban housing is higher than at any time since WWII. Terrific example of how we can put this housing market to work to enhance urban quality of life.

Following Michael Fox’s participation in the South West Insider roundtable in Exeter in May, the pressing question remains: “What’s Next?” Mike played a crucial role in the discussion about ‘Building homes to meet demands in the South West’ and concluded that “something is going to have to give” in the planning system and wider development sector. As a team of planners, urban designers, and landscape architects based in the South West and Wales, this topic is a key concern to us. The planning system is fundamental to the success of all residential development. Funding is critical to delivery in two ways: - Resourcing planning departments, which in turn affects how quickly plans are put in place, how consistently policies are enforced (and how this translates into land values) and how quickly decisions are made. - Supporting best practice - while we understand there are competing demands for public sector funding, facilitating development is essential. To allow the market to evolve, a certain level of financial support needs to be provided for land assembly, infrastructure or pilot projects. To find out what other members in the sector concluded from the roundtable, follow the link below: https://lnkd.in/en4MNsTE #TheUrbanists #Urbanists #FutureofProperty #SouthWestInsider #BusinessInsider #SpacePlanning #SMEDevelopers

🛠️ When considering new construction, it's essential to understand how local building codes affect your investment. When considering a new building development in an urban area, concerns are often raised regarding the effects of overshadowing on surrounding buildings. There are two primary considerations: the planning process and the legal liabilities. The planning process is typically navigated by undertaking a Daylight and Sunlight Assessment, considering guidance prepared by the Building Research Establishment (BRE). The legal liabilities are considered separately through a Right of Light Assessment.
