Firefly Aerospace has recently partnered with the Pentagon's commercial technology arm (DIU) to explore the potential of their Elytra orbital vehicle for missions beyond geosynchronous Earth orbit. This collaboration supports DIU's Sinequone project, which strives to provide cost-effective and responsive access to cislunar space through launch and orbital transfer services. According to Nathan Gapp, DIU program manager, this “will enable the government to evaluate the technical feasibility and operational effectiveness of the company’s responsive launch and delivery capabilities,”. Following the study the aim is for Firefly to deliver three to six orbital vehicles for one or more launches to orbits in cislunar space. #SpaceExploration #InnovationInSpace #Aerospace https://bit.ly/3TUIa3G

SPACEBEL kicks off 2024 with a major comet interceptor contract First European deep Space mission to visit a pristine comet or interstellar body entering the inner Solar system, Comet Interceptor will offer new insights into the dynamic nature of comets as well as the origins of our solar system. SPACEBEL has recently signed an important agreement with OHB Italia S.p.A. (Milano), prime contractor of the Comet Interceptor mission, a programme of and funded by the European Space Agency. The said contract regards the provision of the Central Software that manages the whole spacecraft, its platform equipment and its payload instruments. This new project will involve a team of up to ten SPACEBEL engineers over the next two years. #softwareengineering #softwaredevelopment #computerscience #spaceindustry #space #spaceinnovation #spacetechnology #itandsoftware #onboardsoftware #centralsoftware #spacesegment https://lnkd.in/em45r3hP

🚀 Portal Space Systems 𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐚𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐮𝐠 - 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚 Portal Space Systems on April 30, announcing that it has been awarded a contract from the U.S. Department of Defense worth more than $3,000,000. These funds, as well as an undisclosed private investment, will be used to develop a space tugboat called Supernova. Jeff Thornburg and his team have developed a “satellite bus” that can move a satellite from low-Earth orbit to geostationary orbit in a matter of hours. This distinguishes it from traditional spacecraft, which are built to carry exactly as much propulsion power as needed to maintain orbit. Portal Space Systems says the 500-kilogram Supernova will not depend on payloads and will be able to spend at least five years in space with constant maneuvering. For this purpose, a new solar-thermal propulsion system has been developed that provides a speed of 6 kilometers per second. The first flight demonstration of the satellite is planned for late 2025 or early 2026. #archtown #spacescience #innovations #supernova

The United States Space Force has set a new record for responsive launch, with the Victus Nox mission launching a satellite into orbit just 37 hours after it was integrated with the rocket. The development of responsive launch capabilities is a critical priority for the Space Force. As the US becomes more and more dependent on space-based assets, it is essential that the Space Force be able to launch satellites quickly and reliably to meet the needs of the warfighter. #innovation #spaceforce #space #engineering

Terran Orbital Corporation awarded a $15.2 million contract from the US Space Force Terran Orbital Corporation announced it was awarded a $15.2 million contract to supply Ambassador Class satellite platforms complete with solar arrays and support equipment to the Air Force Research Laboratory AFRL. The contract, managed through Axient Corporation, will integrate payloads onto these ESPA-Grande size space vehicle platforms to support specific United States Space Force missions. Delivery is planned in the 4th quarter of 2024. “These platforms are based on Terran Orbital’s commercial off-the-shelf Ambassador platform, similar to those provided for the Space Development Agency’s Tranche 1 Transport Layer satellites being delivered by Lockheed Martin,” said Marc Bell, Terran Orbital’s Co-Founder, Chairman, and Chief Executive Officer. “Demonstrating Terran Orbital’s commitment to Responsive Space, these space vehicles will be delivered off Terran Orbital’s production line in less than twelve months,” Bell added. #TerranOrbital #SpaceForce #AFRL #Axient #Award #Satellite #Space https://lnkd.in/e_NREykg

New details on the revolutionary Astroscale US in-space refueler for the United States Space Force Astroscale US has been awarded a $25.5 million contract to design and deliver to the United States Space Force (USSF) a satellite to refuel other compatible satellites in space. The launch-ready Astroscale Prototype Servicer for Refueling, or APS-R, will be delivered by 2026. “The advent of in-air refueling completely changed the equation for the duration and distance of aircraft missions,” said President and Managing Director of Astroscale US, Ron Lopez. “The space industry is on the cusp of a similar fuel-led technological revolution, and I am thrilled that SSC has selected Astroscale US to develop APS-R to bring fuel to its client spacecraft. This innovation in on-orbit servicing will ultimately extend the range and mobility of satellites in orbit, allowing the USSF to do more with their operational assets. APS-R opens the door to rethinking the way satellites are designed and operated, marking a significant leap forward in the capabilities and sustainability of satellites in orbit.” #Space #US #USSpaceForce #Refueler #Satellite #Orbit #Spacecraft https://lnkd.in/dassGXYA

Space Force plans to purchase commercial space capabilities - Federal News Network The Space Force is seeking to integrate commercial innovation into Space Domain Awareness. The Space Force has created several initiatives to achieve this goal, including the Space Domain Awareness Marketplace, the SSC Front Door, and SpaceWERX. The Space Force is also looking to concentrate on Space Domain Awareness (SDA) and move away from the tracking and conjunction assessment of objects in space, especially as the majority of objects in orbit are increasingly commercially owned and operated . The Space Force has issued several requests for information, requests for proposal, and sources sought notices for networking capabilities in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and quantum for cyber defense to fulfill the DoD great power strategic competition initiatives. These initiatives aim to develop a tactically responsive space capability that can rapidly detect, warn, characterize, attribute, and predict threats to national, allied, and commercial space systems. What are some other storage solutions for big data? Space Force is looking to leverage data gathered by the Department of Commerce (DoC) to enhance its own efforts to improve space domain awareness (SDA). The DoC is gearing up a new space tracking system to help commercial satellite operators avoid on-orbit smashups. The Space Force will be looking to see if it can leverage data gathered by DoC to enhance its own efforts to improve SDA Data lake storage is a storage solution that can cater to the needs of data scientists, engineers, and traditional data warehouse professionals.
