Housing is among the most fundamental human needs. Our health, wellness, and relationships all depend on stable housing. National Housing Day is a time to recommit to the goal of ensuring that all Canadians have a home and to express optimism that such a goal is attainable, with the right investments. Peel Region’s HOME advocacy framework shares some lessons we’ve learned in addressing the affordability crisis – recognizing people’s holistic needs to help get and keep housing.   1) Homes are for living, so ensure the use of housing for homes by eliminating speculation and hoarding through policy tools. 2) Offer more funding for wraparound supports because housing stability is not just about supply. 3) Maximize affordable supply by maintaining and expanding community and supportive housing – for-profit market supply alone will not solve the housing affordability crisis. 4) Expand income and social supports because individuals shouldn’t have to choose between their home and other necessities.   In Peel, less than 25 cents of every dollar spent on housing supports comes from the provincial and federal government. All levels of government need to work together to deliver much-needed, effective, interventions that can end the affordable housing crisis. 🏠 As the president pushes for legislation to cap rent increases and repurpose federal properties for affordable housing, we are witnessing a crucial step towards addressing the housing crisis in our communities. 🔍 This move is an essential measure to protect vulnerable populations from displacement and ensure access to safe and affordable housing for all Americans. 📈 With a focus on stabilizing rent prices and utilizing federal properties for affordable housing, we can expect to see positive shifts in the accessibility and affordability of housing options in the near future. 🏗️ Repurposing federal properties represents a sustainable solution that can efficiently expand affordable housing stock while revitalizing communities across the nation. 🛠️ By implementing these initiatives, we have the potential to create a more equitable and inclusive society where everyone has the opportunity to thrive and access quality housing. 🏡 Let's support these efforts and work towards a future where everyone has a place to call home and no one is left behind in the quest for stable and affordable housing options.

🏡C² Challenge: Missing Middle Affordable Housing 🏡 We spoke to 13 Colorado jurisdictions about the biggest problems facing their community. One of the four most salient challenges is Missing Middle Affordable Housing. The World Economic Forum Forum (WEF) has declared a global housing crisis. In an article, WEF emphasizes the need for innovative approaches to improve housing affordability, accessibility, and quality worldwide. By granting flexibility to these agencies, they can develop customized solutions tailored to their communities' needs, potentially informing future national housing policies. This can benefit jurisdictions by encouraging creative problem-solving, increasing housing choices for families, and sharing best practices that can be scaled nationally. Keep an eye out for what these jurisdictions accomplish because it may be headed your way if they succeed.

There is no one-size-fits-all solution for addressing housing needs, but ensuring a balanced mix of options, including co-operative housing, is essential. Many European nations lead the way in innovative co-operative housing, where the focus is on creating homes designed for people, not profit.
