🌟 Brent Cross Town - Creating Flourishing Communities 🌟 I’ve got a special connection to the Brent Cross Town project. From the new towers rising from the old industrial area, I’m reminded of where my parents first met—my dad driving buses in the 60s and my mum working at Collindale Hospital. I can also see the area where they were married—coincidentally, the same place where I was married—and the park where I taught my daughters to ride their bikes and bowl leg breaks. Although I was born in Willesden, my parents decided to move to Bedfordshire for what they hoped would be better opportunities, leading me to grow up in the small village of Toddington—the same village as Kevin McCloud. I often reflect on how different my life might have been if we had stayed in Willesden and if the opportunities my parents thought were lacking in the 1970s had existed. That’s why working on Brent Cross Town and contributing to the Flourishing Index feels so meaningful to me. It’s a way to connect my personal history with the future of the area. What excites me about Brent Cross Town is more than just the redevelopment. It’s about creating a community where people have access to opportunity—to green spaces, a healthy lifestyle, and the chance to thrive—elements that everyone deserves. In 2023, San Francisco issued 1,136 residential building permits. It was the lowest total since the Great Recession in 2007. Using data from 1,200 zoning districts, the Community Development Long Island (CDLI), the Rauch Foundation, the Long Island Community Foundation, and the CUNY Graduate Center have created a comprehensive platform mapping all zoning districts of Long Island to show what types of housing are permitted in each area. We're pleased to be at the Building Garden Communities Conference today. Our Senior Researcher Hani Salih took part in an engaging discussion on the potential role of Build to Rent (BTR) development in Garden Towns. Here are some key insights that came up: - Richard B. highlighted how single-family housing can serve as a catalyst for diverse housing options within communities. - Jo Davis discussed the substantial £1.9 billion investment in single-family housing, emphasising its appeal for immediate occupancy and its potential to foster vibrant, legacy-driven communities. - David Reid underscored the potential of institutional ownership and management in ensuring the longevity and quality of BTR developments. - Eve Murzyn emphasised the importance of understanding local needs and engaging with local authorities from the outset to tailor BTR solutions to specific communities. - Hani Salih highlighted the significance of resident involvement and the integration of green spaces to foster community cohesion and a sense of belonging. It was suggested that BTR is a must-have because of the institutional capital it brings, its potential to create communities early on, and the possibilities it brings for providing a diverse mix of housing and tenure types and infrastructure. Manorwood Homes, a Cavco company, has partnered with Habitat for Humanity International to build modular homes for deserving families. These factory-built modular homes are constructed to high quality standards in less time than traditional stick-built homes. This innovative approach to working smarter, not harder, is the perfect way to expand Habitat's impact in the communities it serves. “It’s been our absolute pleasure to build our relationship with Manorwood Homes (Cavco),” said Maureen Lashlee, CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Dutchess County, New York. “At a time when America is experiencing a housing crisis, Manorwood Homes has helped us grow from building one house every two years to building five houses in one year.” Looking ahead, Manorwood Homes and Habitat for Humanity are gearing up for several new projects. In Ulster County, they will break ground on a 10-lot subdivision this fall, featuring eight Manorwood modular homes and two stick-built homes. Dutchess County has another ranch home on order, with groundbreaking for a five-lot subdivision planned for spring. Similar plans are underway in Monroe, Steuben and Orange counties. How is our tree canopy changing? From 2010 to 2017, we can observe significant loss of coverage. In Dane County, the Village of Brooklyn, Village of Belleville, Town of Primrose, City of Stoughton, and City of Monona have experienced canopy decreases of 30% or higher. Meanwhile, the City of Madison, Town of Primrose, Town of Perry, and Town of Vermont have lost the greatest total acres of canopy within the county.
