Across the African continent, soil health has been declining for decades. Shifting that trajectory requires serious collaboration across stakeholders and scales. “When it comes to soil health, there is a need for a paradigm shift: from demonstration plots to working with farmers in their own fields and at landscape scale – from the mountains all the way to rangelands. Leigh Winowiecki At the Africa Fertilizer and Soil Health Summit (AFSHS), CIFOR-ICRAF researchers joined other stakeholders to highlight the crucial role of fertilizer and soil health in stimulating sustainable pro-poor productivity growth in African agriculture – and to agree on a fertilizer and soil health action plan for the continent. In all of the sessions, scientists echoed the importance of soil health and discussed ways of improving this at scale across Africa. Read more: ➡️ https://bit.ly/3RxbFqL #Trees4Resilience

European Commission Joint Research Centre support to climate-informed agricultural decision making in developing regions: Each growing season, African farmers cast concerned glances at the sky. From the Gulf of Guinea to the Horn of Africa, from the Great Lakes region to the Cape of Good Hope, maize depends mainly on rainfall to grow. Changes in precipitation and temperature during its development may result in a plentiful harvest or a poor one, threatening a key source of food security and livelihoods for more than 200 million people in sub-Saharan Africa. A study just published by the #JRC in the Nature Food journal aims to further support climate-informed agricultural decision making in developing regions. Using a large-scale, data-limited analysis approach, researchers mapped the uneven response of maize in sub-Saharan Africa to shifts in the occurrence of dry/wet spells across the growing season. According to their findings, changes in specific dry/wet spell patterns during maize development explained twice as much year-to-year maize yield variability (50-60%) than mean changes in precipitation and temperature (30-35%). This research is a significant step forward in our collective effort to combat the impacts of climate change on global food security. #ClimateChange #FoodSecurity #Agriculture #Research #ClimateSmartAgriculture" You can find the article at https://lnkd.in/dACCwKA6

I am excited to share our recent publication on crop selection and the techniques for choosing crops/genotypes that can thrive in saline and arid environments. # In the Near East and North Africa (NENA) region, crop production is being impacted by various abiotic factors such as freshwater scarcity, climate, and soil salinity. Consequently, farmers in this region are seeking salt-tolerant crops/genotypes that can flourish in these challenging environments and utilize poor-quality groundwater. Barley stands out as one of the primary staple food crops for most countries in MENA region, including Tunisia.# https://lnkd.in/dkBrGGZj #Salinity #aridenvironment #cropsgenotypesselection #barley
A new study by #ICBAAgriculture, in partnership with the National Agronomic Institute of Tunisia #INAT, has been published in Frontiers in Plant Science demonstrating the use of chlorophyll fluorescence as a powerful tool for selecting barley genotypes tolerant to salinity and drought. This method assesses photosynthetic efficiency under stress, allowing early detection of plant health and resilience. The study identified varieties like Souihli and Batini 100/1B as more resilient in various environments across Tunisia, supporting sustainable agriculture and food security in the NENA region. Read the full paper here: https://bit.ly/3MZbMJ1 نُشرت دراسة بحثية جديدة أعدها #إكبا بالتعاون مع المعهد الوطني للبحوث الفلاحية في تونس، في مجلة Frontiers in Plant Science تُظهر فعالية استخدام فلورسنت الكلوروفيل كأداة قوية لانتقاء الأنماط الجينية للشعير المتحملة للملوحة والجفاف.

🌾🌱At the recent #BeninSeedSummit, a renewed emphasis was placed on strengthening African seed systems. For too long, broken seed systems have denied farmers access to essential technologies. Dr. Martin Fregene, Director of Agriculture & Agro-Industry at the African Development Bank Group, highlights Ethiopia as a successful example of how access to improved seed varieties can lead to seed sufficiency. 📊The summit underscored the importance of prioritizing foundation seeds and ensuring access to certified seeds through sustainable seed systems. Empowering SMEs to play a more active role can achieve this. ❓What are your thoughts on the importance of #SeedSystemDevelopment in Africa? Let's discuss in the comments! #SeedSystems #AfricanAgriculture #BeninSeedBusinessSummit #TAATinBenin #Agriculture #Partnership #FoodSecurity #BeninSummit2024 #SustainableDevelopment #EngageTAAT #FeedAfrica Beth Dunford, Musabyimana Innocent, Alphonso Van Marsh Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation CGIAR, Professor Lindiwe Majele Sibanda, Ismahane Elouafi, Simeon Ehui, Kenton Dashiell, Bernard Vanlauwe, Chrys Akem The World Bank, USAID, Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), European Union, FAO, MEDA (Mennonite Economic Development Associates), Sahel Consulting , Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA), International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) BASICS II, AATF, AfricaRice AfricaRice, Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa - FARA, International Potato Center (CIP), ICRISAT, ICARDA; International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas, International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC), International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), International Water Management Institute (IWMI), WorldFish, World Vegetable Center

📢 Excited to announce the publication of our new paper: "Remote Sensing and Field Data Analysis to Evaluate the Impact of Stone Bunds on Rainfed Agriculture in West Africa" 🌍, published in Land journal (October 2024). In this study, we assess the effectiveness of stone bunds in improving soil moisture, vegetation health, and crop yields in the semi-arid Upper East Region of Ghana, a key area for agricultural productivity in West Africa. 🌾🌱 Through a combination of remote sensing and field data, we provide valuable insights into how these sustainable land management practices can mitigate the challenges of water scarcity and enhance resilience in rainfed agriculture.
