If you haven't listened to this week's episode of Real Space Strategy, here's a quote to encourage you to do so.... “… people need to keep in perspective how dependent we have become on space … those 10,200 satellites on-orbit of every nation’s registry are up there doing 24/7 365 day operations and it becomes awfully easy for our sister services to look at the Space Force as a service provider … there is not going to be any support to the warfighter if we get into a war because our satellites are absolutely undefended … the enemy has more weapons than we have satellites that they need to defend. Space Force only operates an average of 70 satellites. The Chinese have 400 satellites. We are a second-rate Space Force; we took our eyes off the ball … right now the Space Force is getting about 3.5% of the entire DoD budget and we have to catch up. We are so far behind the curve plus we have over- bureaucratized our management of space … we have to provide space superiority in challenged and contested space, or we won’t be able to provide services to anyone anywhere … we don’t have the types of weapons to hold at risk enemies who would challenge us in space. Therefore, we have no deterrent capability, no deterrent credibility. We are sitting ducks.” Dr. M.V. The U.S. space regulatory regime has evolved, but what’s been so hard about finding the right mix? When it comes to US leadership in commercial space, how can insight into the Great Power Competition be leveraged for national security? In this episode Brian Weeden, Systems Director for CSPS, and Geoff Reber, Principal Scientist for Aerospace’s Defense Space Acquisition talk to Victoria Woodburn. #SpacePolicy #CommercialSpace #GPC #SpaceAgenda2025

An intense 45 minutes at Global MilSatCom! Sustainability of orbits and sustainability of spectrum would require one conference each but, together with co-panelists Andrew D'Uva, Martin Coleman, and Dave Black, I did my best to provide an introduction tailored to a military audience. Cheat sheet: - Outer Space is one of the Global Commons (like the ocean). - Valuable orbits are Common Pool Resources (like the fisheries), characterized by (1) difficulty of exclusion and (2) subtractive consumption. This means that no single entity in in charge of the space environment, whose stewardship is a responsibility shared among all civil and military stakeholders, including spacecraft operators, manufacturers, providers of space situational/domain awareness services, watchdogs, and even legislative bodies. International cooperation is crucial to agree common rules of behaviour, enable exchange of operational data (while respecting national security), and foster convergence of regulatory regimes. Commercial and institutional spacecraft operators - please reach out to the Space Data Association to find out how more than 30 operators are already collaborating to improve space safety and preserve the space environment! With thanks to SAE Media Group Defence for the invitation and to Helen Weedon of Radical Moves Ltd for moderating! #MilSatCom #SpaceSustainability #SpaceSafety #SpaceDebris #SpaceTraffic #SpaceEnvironment
Last week SDA representatives Lorenzo Arona and Andrew D'Uva attended Global Milsatcom where they participated in an interesting panel on 'Ensuring Longterm Sustainability of Space & Spectrum' alongside Helen Weedon & Martin Coleman of the Satcoms Innovation Group (SIG), and Wing Commander Dave Black of UK Space Command. The subject sparked an interactive discussion from the audience, with questions being raised around the predicted exponential rise of space debris as well as the challenges surrounding unequal approaches to debris regulation. Collaboration was the fundamental take-home message from panellists - a coordinated approach will be crucial in the sustainability of space. We would like to extend a thank you to SAE Media Group for the invitation to discuss such an important topic.
