Today, I had the honor of speaking at the ICMA Summit in Hasselt, Flanders, on behalf of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe. ⏭️ Can Europe spearhead global innovation in artificial intelligence? This pivotal question framed our discussions at the recent "Moonshot for AI" conference hosted by CLAIRE & euRobotics aisbl. During our panel, we debated the potential frameworks and strategies possible to position Europe as a leader in AI amidst the complex geopolitical currents of our time. 🇪🇺 The "Discours sur l'Europe" by French President Macron reminded me of the AI conference. (https://lnkd.in/e3_srPdA) While it ofcourse embedded a French perspective, the discourse was enlightening, touching on Europe's achievements and challenges. Central in ‘the discours’ was the quest for strategic autonomy, and how innovation can bolster this pursuit. President Macron highlighted several achievements of the European Innovation Council (European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA), which draws inspiration from the legendary Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), itself a ‘Moonshot’ driven organization from which a lot could/should be replicated. Although my time at the CLAIRE conference was too short and I was not familiar with the organisation until now — it has led to a series of great discussions and follow up meets.  🤖Decoding Complexity: Human + Machine Collaboration Powered by Data 📊 In the era of accelerated innovation, the panel "Decoding Complexity: Human + Machine Collaboration Powered by AI" at South Summit Brazil 2024 highlighted a fundamental principle: the importance of basing every decision on robust and reliable data. In a domain where artificial intelligence promises to revolutionize every aspect of our lives, Bankuish stands firm in the belief that deep data analysis is indispensable, especially when presenting critical data to financial entities. 🗣️Our CEO, José Vicente Fernández Abril, shared the stage with visionaries in technology and artificial intelligence: Vinicius Linck, CTO at 4all; Alexandre Del Rey, PhD, founder of I2AI International Association of Artificial Intelligence; and Sami Abou Saab, CEO of Zigzag. 🤝Thank you to all the participants for joining us in this vital conversation. We will continue leading by the example, demonstrating that the key to decoding the complexity of the future lies in the alliance between data, technology and the human touch.

🌍Meanwhile in Berlin: FIZ Karlsruhe at the #EOSCsymposium and #EOSCxnfdi event! Some of our colleagues participated in the annual EOSC Symposium and the co-located NFDI x EOSC event which both took place in Berlin October 21-24. Of course both venues were packed with valuable insights! A particular highlight was the World Café Table on Artificial Intelligence, where key people from #EOSC and #NFDI projects came together to discuss. 💡 Our discussions focused on the current status and challenges of cross-disciplinary AI initiatives, such as #NFDI4DS and #AI4EOSC, on both national and European levels. One clear takeaway: AI is well-represented at all levels – but as always, there’s more work to be done! Here are some of the desired next steps identified by the participants: 🌐 Better connect European HPC and AI initiatives 🤖 Create stronger European alternatives to commercial chatbots like ChatGPT and cloud hosting solutions such as Amazon Web Services for researchers across Europe ⚖️ Establish clearer legal regulations so researchers in Germany and Europe know exactly what they can and cannot do 📊 Develop new metadata standards to label data in a machine-readable way, identifying potential AI applications And this is just the beginning – many more exciting topics were discussed! 📣 ECAT presented to Spanish Minister for Digital Transformation The European Centre for Algorithmic Transparency (#ECAT) team met with José Luis Escrivá, Spanish Minister of Digital Transformation and Civil Service, to discuss the importance of algorithmic transparency and cooperation in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The meeting highlighted the Spanish government's interest in ECAT's activities, particularly in the area of AI, and their willingness to learn from ECAT's knowledge to ensure the effective implementation of current and upcoming legistlation at both national and EU levels.   I had the honour and pleasure, to present ECAT's work alongside Team Leaders Josep Soler Garrido and Emilia Gómez, showcasing the centre's expertise in algorithmic transparency and the key results obtained so far. Minister Escrivá emphasized the need to continue building expertise in this area and was confident that ECAT could be pivotal in bridging knowledge gaps in this sector and facilitate cooperation among designated national authorities. The Minister also showed interest in ECAT's research areas, including inspections, minor protection, mental health, AI systemic risks, and talent attraction in the digital sphere.   This meeting marks an important step forward in promoting algorithmic transparency and responsible AI development in Europe, and ECAT looks forward to continuing its collaboration with Member States to achieve this goal. The United Nations recently published Global Principles for Information Integrity to offer a holistic framework to guide multi-stakeholder action for a healthier information ecosystem. CII, in collaboration with the UB Humanities Institute, will publish its first collective volume, Truth-Seeking in an Age of (Mis)Information Overload. The book, edited by David Castillo, Siwei Lyu, christina milletti, and Cynthia Stewart, addresses concerns and calls for action in key areas highlighted by the UN report, including AI safety, research transparency, societal trust and resilience and public empowerment. #InformationIntegrity #UBuffalo
