𝐓𝐲𝐩𝐞-𝐂𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐮𝐬 𝐐𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 Qualification is the process used by the contracting entity to establish compliance of a product with a set of performance and contractual requirements. It is important to clarify the differences between certification and qualification to avoid confusion. Type-Certification: This is a pre-requisite to qualification, though both processes can be conducted in parallel. Type-certification can be granted once all airworthiness requirements are adequately met. These requirements may include performance, availability, reliability, and maintainability aspects that are related to aviation safety. Qualification: This process demonstrates compliance with both safety and capability requirements. Qualification is necessary to achieve an appropriate release (entry into service) for military use and/or formal acceptance by military services. This involves establishing that the product meets a set of performance and contractual requirements set by the contracting entity, which are typically more extensive and specific than those covered by type-certification. Principal Consultant, Duane Kritzinger (BEng, MBA) delves into updated Def Stan 00-056 and its implications in our most recent blog. Def Stan 00-056 states that the Safety Management Systems (SMS) need to ultimately create and support the Safety Case(s) via the completion of 8 deliverables set out in the Data Item Descriptions (DIDs). It is not domain specific, applying also to tanks, submarines and facilities, and its efficient application in the Military Aviation domain, in compliance with the UK MAA’s Regulatory Articles, requires careful thought. Approaching the topic from an Initial Airworthiness perspective, this blog stresses the importance of understanding the practical implications of 00-056 compliance and encourages collaboration among stakeholders to establish realistic expectations within contractual obligations. KBR goes beyond the basic engineering design. B-52 Flight and F-35 Jet flight are perfect examples of that
#KBR was awarded an estimated $82 million contract by the United States Air Force to provide world class lifecycle management of the B-52 aircraft. With this win, KBR maintains its solid eight-year presence in the B-52 program office and will address critical technology areas for the Department of Defense, including reliability analysis, developing non-destructive inspection (NDI) and test techniques, developing maintenance procedures and techniques, and analyzing tools for reliability data. New Acquisition and Sustainment of Commercial Derivative Aircraft (CDA) Learning Path on Avolve! In case you haven’t heard, DoD personnel (military, civilian, and contractors) working in CDA programs have a new learning path available through the Air Force Institute of Technology, School of Systems and Logistics (AFIT LS). The learning path covers CDA airworthiness and certification, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) partnerships and continued operational safety, continuous airworthiness maintenance programs, and product support considerations. There are six steps in the learning path, including an Executive Training session, and the training consists of both videos and presentations. The AFIT LS CDA Learning Path can be accessed via the AFIT LS website - www.afit.edu/LS/avolve.cfm first time users may be required to register on the AFIT Avolve website then navigate to the Learning Path for “Acquisition & Sustainment of Commercial Derivative Aircraft (CDA).” This training is available to personnel with a common access card (CAC).

In the UK Defence Journal there is a fascinating article concerning the upgrades to the A400M firefighting kit. Surely it could fit in a RAAF C17 and maybe the C130s and Spartans? So considering the ongoing bushfires all over Australia, why has this equipment not been procured???

The ability for militaries to conduct Live, Virtual, and Constructive (LVC) training has accelerated over the past few years thanks to the required underlying technology having progressed. Fundamentally, LVC generates a comprehensive training and simulation environment by integrating real and simulated elements rather than one or the other. Valiant Shield 2024 was the United States Department of Defense's first advanced LVC aviation training exercise conducted in the Indo-Pacific region. This training connected live aircraft with simulators, allowing US Navy and United States Marine Corps pilots to engage in high-level, realistic training scenarios. LVC training initiatives such as Valiant Shield are useful in training real people, on actual platforms - but against a scalable, virtual threat. I.e. a peer adversary with fifth-generation assets, that could not be simulated using friendly assets. #airpower #aviation #LVC #aerospace #defence
Marty Kauchak highlights the US DoD's expansion of Live Virtual Constructive (LVC) #training, with significant advancements during Valiant Shield 2024, marking the first high-level LVC #aviation training in Guam.

Saab has signed an initial three-year contract with the UK Ministry of Defence, for the provision of support to Live Simulation systems with ILT-D (Instrumented Live Training), valued at £60M and options to extend until 2030. The ILT-D contract, replaces the previous DFWES (Direct Fire Weapon Effect Simulator) contract. ILT-D supports high fidelity systems that use a blend of laser and geometric pairing technology to simulate direct and indirect fire effects. This data rich capability provides objective feedback which is used to inform the After Action Review (AAR) process and validate training. The contract includes a significant investment in extending the life of the capability to provide the UK MoD with the most modern system available. This ensures it remains relevant to the British Army’s evolving training needs, addresses obsolescence issues, and continues to be interoperable with partner nations through exploitation of the latest generation of Saab hardware and software. #military #defense #defence #militaryleak https://lnkd.in/gQyMQvew

The U.S. military has announced that the V-22 Osprey fleet is set to take flight once again, following a three-month grounding. While no equipment modifications will be made, there will be an increase in the frequency of inspections to enhance safety measures. The decision comes after a fatal crash off the coast of Japan in November, which led to the grounding of the entire fleet of over 400 Osprey aircraft. Leaders from the United States Marine Corps, United States Air Force, and US Navy have confirmed that troops' training will be refreshed, and maintenance procedures will be modified to ensure safe operations. With the Osprey's unique capabilities as a tiltrotor aircraft, it plays a crucial role in military operations, particularly for the Marine Corps. The Osprey's ability to take off and land like a helicopter, and then transition to fixed-wing flight, makes it invaluable for missions in areas without established runways. Although investigations into the Osprey program continue, the military is confident in the system's overall performance and safety record. #V22Osprey #MilitaryAviation #TrainingRenewal #TiltrotorAircraft #FlightOperations
