The hydrogen market is expected to benefit significantly from the increased use of low-emission fuels. #Hydrogen must be produced using energy. The energy input and energy composition of the synthetic gas should ideally correspond. Energy transition occurs throughout the hydrogen production process, including #electrolysis and reforming. Electrical energy, as well as #hydrocarbon #chemicalenergy, are converted into hydrogen. Unfortunately, energy is always lost during the hydrogen manufacturing process. Hydrogen production is the industrial method for generating hydrogen gas. There are four main sources for the commercial production of hydrogen: natural gas, oil, coal, and electrolysis of water, which account for 48%, 30%, 18%, and 4% of the world’s hydrogen production, respectively. Hydrogen plays an important role in the chemicals and oil & gas industries. Hydrogen extracted from various processes is classified into three types: blue hydrogen, grey hydrogen, and green hydrogen. Grey hydrogen is hydrogen produced from fossil fuel resources where the carbon capture and storage process is not implemented. 💡 Methanol is a promising low-cost hydrogen carrier given its high energy density, ease of transportation, and lower risk compared to ammonia. M2X Energy Inc. is dedicated in minimizing the cost and carbon intensity of the integrated process from crude methanol production, transporting methanol as low-cost carrier for hydrogen, then reforming methanol to hydrogen at point of use. One question that we are particularly interested in is if the energy intensive upgrading step can be bypassed for an electrochemical route to reform M2X's low-carbon methanol to hydrogen. To answer the question Chen Hsiang-Sheng (Johnson) is working towards understanding the associated energy penalties when crude methanol is used 'as-is' in electrolysis. Hydrogen is vital for refining processes like hydrotreating, hydrocracking, and catalytic reforming. Refineries use various methods to produce hydrogen, each with trade-offs.
