Did you know about 26 billion pounds (12 million metric tons) of plastic is dumped into the ocean each year – equal to nearly 100,000 blue whales? 🌊🗑️
This week is National Beach Clean-up Week in the US, and SCJ people are committed to helping tackle the plastic waste crisis to protect our beautiful beaches. From the Blue Paradox exhibit to beach clean-ups around the globe, we’re tackling the plastic waste issue head-on.
It takes all of us—individuals, businesses, and governments—to change how we produce, use, and recycle plastic.

The world is drowning in plastic, and it's killing our planet. 🌍 Every minute, the equivalent of a garbage truck of plastic is dumped into our oceans, harming marine life and entering our food chain. 🐠 But we can make a difference. Here are some quick tips:
1. Say no to single-use plastics: Carry your own water bottle, coffee cup, and shopping bags. 🚫🥤
2. Recycle: Make sure your plastic waste ends up in the recycling bin, not the landfill. ♻️
3. Support companies that use recycled materials: Vote with your wallet and choose products made from recycled materials. 💵
Let's take immediate action. Start today and make a pledge to reduce your plastic waste. Every small action counts in the fight against plastic pollution. #StopPlasticPollution ✊
Wonder where your used plastic goes?
Landfills, water bodies, and ignited fires create lifelong hazards for eco spaces. The act of recycling and revamping generates valuable resources for the community.
Unfortunately, our community continues to overlook these essential processes, thereby exacerbating the problem of plastic waste. Choosing to generate new resources rather than fully optimising the existing ones will only serve to escalate the plastic count.
𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐲- Join the challenge to reduce plastic.

#EarthDay2024 – Reducing plastic waste and usage, isn’t something that will happen overnight.
That won’t work.
It’s about making small changes over a long period of time.
For example:
🥤 Remove one single use plastic from your weekly shopping every week
🥤 Recycle those plastics you must use
🥤 Don’t throw (any) trash on the ground, carry it with you until you find a bin.
Little things, that If everyone did would make a huge difference.
The Green Task Force and PATT Foundation have done litter picks, site clears and general tidying, and you’d be shocked (horrified) at the amount of single use plastic we’ve found (even in remote Welsh valleys).
We only have one earth, so let’s look after it.
🌎Happy #EarthDay from all of us at Friendlier!🌎Now that we've reused 1.6 million containers, let's dive deeper into what that means for our planet:
🌱 Plastic Waste Saved: We've prevented 92,800 kg of plastic waste from entering our landfills and oceans. That's protecting 19,112 sea turtles from plastic ingestion.
💧 Water Saved: We've saved 12,951,040 L of water by reusing containers! That's equivalent to the lifetime supply of water for 228 humans.
🌿 GHG Emissions Avoided: Our efforts have also avoided 268,800 kg of greenhouse gas emissions, equivalent to driving 973,329 km.
Thank you to our #FriendlierPartners and #FriendlierCommunity for being part of this journey towards a more sustainable future. Let's keep reusing, reducing, and making a positive impact together! 💙

🌊 The Sad Reality of Plastic Pollution influence on marine life🌊
Majestic sharks are found with stomachs full of plastic, leading to malnutrition and reproductive issues. Gentle sea turtles ingest plastic bags, mistaking them for jellyfish, resulting in blockages and death.
Every piece of plastic waste can harm these creatures. Let's reduce plastic use, promote recycling, and support ocean clean-up efforts to protect marine life.

🌊🌍 The Plastic Problem 🌍🌊
Every year, millions of tons of plastic waste end up in our oceans, harming marine life and ecosystems. 🐢🌱
The Impact on Wildlife
Marine animals often mistake plastic for food, leading to injury or death. We must act now to protect our wildlife. 🐋💔
The Power of Recycling
By recycling plastic, we reduce the amount of waste in landfills and oceans. Recycling conserves resources and energy. ♻💡
How You Can Help
Start by sorting your plastic waste and ensuring it gets to a recycling facility. Encourage others to do the same! 🌿🙌
Make a Difference Today
Every small action counts. Choose to recycle and be part of the solution to end plastic pollution. Together, we can make a big impact! 💪🌟

Amazing message to share with your contacts. It is very sad to see from what source is coming and what we do to get rid of it.
There is so much more than recycling, which by the way is not done in most of the cases. We export our plastic to paradise like Indonesia. Oh and then waste pickers have a livelihood!! So ironic!!

We can't recycle our way out of this.
We buy 1 million PET bottles / minute.
That's 525 billion bottles each year, globally.
99% is made from oil. Only 28% is recycled.
The rest is burned, landfilled, or littered.
If we don't act, by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean.
We know what to do:
REFUSE -> REDUCE -> REUSE -> RECYCLE
We've got the whole world in our hands.
Let's turn off the tap on plastic pollution.

Many times, I hear about sustainability on projects, in the form of LEED, FITWEL, WELL, purchasing new materials made from recycled materials, etc but what is often forgotten and can make a huge difference is our everyday purchasing power.
The below post made me think about how much of an impact could we make if we switched some of these everyday decisions to more sustainable ones? Such as ordering from food vendors that supply compostable food containers, utensils, and cups, especially if the office has a compost bin.
What impact could we have if we made these small decisions that would align with an organization's overall sustainability goals?
To anyone overseeing an office's daily operations or hosting events, past or present, what do you think? Do you have the purchasing power to make these small changes and bring about a large impact? Has it crossed your mind?
