I can only echo and amplify Colin's comments below on this panel!
I had the pleasure of speaking on a panel hosted by our LGBTQ+ employee resource group, The LGBTQ+ Alliance, yesterday. We shared insights on the successes and challenges of being authentically LGBTQ+ in the workplace. I’m so grateful to have been given a platform to share my passion for creating inclusive environments. Not only did it provide an opportunity to create an inclusive workplace for LGBTQ+ professionals, but I had a blast connecting with colleagues Matthew Hintz, Sarah Cole, Zachary L. Berliner, and Lauren Wittenberg! Many thanks to the wonderful Shane Diamond for moderating and Angela Gehring for her introduction!

"When you're accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression." I love Pride Month. Our company has tried hard to be a place where everyone feels welcome and respected - it's in our core values and it turns out there are no qualifiers around the word "everyone". However, I'm always a little disappointed with some of the reactions I see on social media and otherwise around the time Pride Month. They are usually variations on the same theme - that because one does not understand it or see its value, it's dismissed as a waste of time, dollars, mind space, and ultimately seen as a sign that "we" (individuals, companies, the entire country, everybody) is becoming too woke (whatever that word even means anymore). It always smacks of fear and/or a fundamental misunderstanding to me when I see these kinds of reactions. My unsolicited advice to folks who feel this way is to step back, listen, and observe. Be curious. Sure Pride can be fun for a lot of people, but it also is a time to recognize that there's a large portion of our fellow humans who are marginalized for not being cis-het. If that wasn't the case, then there'd be no need for Pride as a "thing". We would just have people living their lives the way they want and loving who they want. But, as the data and the stories will show, there is still marginalization, bias, and prejudice evident for the LGBTQ+ community. So, if you're genuinely struggling with understanding the point or purpose of Pride, practice that active listening and let those who are actually impacted do the talking.

A time to celebrate with, advocate for, listen to and show absolute support of our wonderfully diverse LGBTI+ communities and reflect on how we can all be the change we want to see in the world. We've taken some decent strides towards equality in recent years. That being said, we still live in a world where Faith-based schools can LEGALLY expel and sack LGBTQ students and teachers respectively; where elite sportspeople in major codes don't feel safe being 'out'; and where sickening violence and displays of hatred can still bubble to the surface as they did just a few short months ago in Melbourne and Sydney... there is still a very long way for us to go. It is great to see all the progressive organisations here on LinkedIn making pride pledges, implementing inclusion programs, rainbowing their logos, encouraging the use of gender neutral language and respecting each other's pronouns. Descrimination in (almost...) all its forms is illegal...hopefully the Attorney General's review of Faith-based schools will bear fruit... but laws are the effect, not the cause of social change. The cause can start with a simple little thing like rainbowing your logo, engaging in a conversation and making your employees and colleagues feel comfortable to bring their whole selves to work. #diversityequityandinclusion #prideatwork #prideisnotjustforamonth

Brighton Trans Pride and Brighton Pride are big events. Really big. It makes you think all is well and going in the right direction. It isn't. While political parties are currently making things worse, often aligning with anti-LGBT+ organisations, workplaces can do much better. It's simply about creating cultures of mutual respect and dignity, where "being yourself at work" is never a thing to fear or even doubt. "Over a third of respondents (and over a half of trans employees specifically) reported disguising their LGBTQ+ identity at work due to fear of discrimination, and 18% of LGB+, 26% of trans, and 37% of non-binary employees reported not being ‘out’ at work. Perhaps most concerningly, 12% of LGBTQ+ employees were encouraged by colleagues to hide their LGBTQ+ identity - this again, more than doubled for trans employees. "Three in five respondents agreed that their workplace had appropriate policies in place to protect LGBTQ+ employees, however fewer than half felt policies adequately protected trans employees. Further, 12% of LGB+ respondents shared that they wouldn’t feel comfortable reporting homophobic or biphobic bullying, rising to 20% for trans employees regarding transphobic bullying."
In support of Pride Day, Billy Campbell's blog reflects on the positive progress made towards improving LGBTQ+ inclusion in the workplace, and considers how LGBTQ+ employees can be better welcomed and supported in order to achieve full equality and inclusion.
