Corporate motorsports hospitality growth potential in India Both F1 and MotoGP started in Europe, but they are now truly global, and there is a truly global fan base. Originally with a European fan base, this has expanded to the Americas and then Asia, Australasia. Fans from Europe come to Singapore and India, and Asian fans go overseas to popular races. Valencia and Barcelona are popular destinations for MotoGP, for example. F1 in 2023 is held in 22 circuits globally, starting with Bahrain and concluding in Abu Dhabi. MotoGP in 2023 is held in 20 circuits globally, starting with Algarve (Portugal) and concluding in Valencia (Spain). I caught up with my friend from Barcelona Ms Griselda Foguet Plaza who is Hospitality & Experiences Director of Dorna Sports which runs the MotoGP business globally. “It was the first time that we did MotoGP in India. I felt there is a huge and much bigger potential for MotoGP in India. We are of course coming back next year, which will be bigger and better” said Griselda san. MotoGP just held its India debut race just in October 2023. MotoGP India had over 110,000 spectators join in its inaugural year. Corporate motorsports hospitality entertainment is big. Top B to B customers are invited to motorsports events. Entertaining top customers at the F1 is really big. The Paddock Club for VIP entertainment in Singapore costs a whopping 11,000 USD or more for a 3 day pass. Free flowing champagne, food by Michelin star chefs, and more. For MotoGP India it can start from 2,000 Euros for a 2 day pass, but prices are likely set to increase next year. VIP corporate motorsports entertainment at hospitality suites are more and more popular - that wine and dine at the highest levels to ensure better business relationships and deals. For those who are not at the hospitality suites, in other words the majority of spectators, food and drinks can be on the pricey side at the food stalls, but given the fantastic atmosphere of enjoying food and drink at motorsports events, customers are happy to pay that bit extra. F1 may come back to India, and MotoGP will only grow in India, it will be exciting to see motorsports grow in India, and VIP corporate hospitality too. Another year, and another #Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix is upon us. We all know what we'll get, a procession of cars, with limited overtaking and racing excitement around the #Pricipality's narrow street circuit. Playing devil's advocate, isn't it about time this outdated race was dumped from the #F1 season? Here are a few reasons to consider why: 1. Track Layout and Racing Quality: * Limited Overtaking: The narrow and twisty layout of the Monaco circuit makes overtaking extremely difficult, often resulting in processional races where qualifying positions largely determine the race outcome. * Safety Concerns: The tight confines and lack of run-off areas can make crashes more severe and hazardous for drivers. 2. #Technological Mismatch: * Modern F1 Cars: The current generation of F1 cars, with their larger size and increased downforce, are not well-suited to the narrow streets of Monaco. This can exacerbate the overtaking difficulties and lead to less exciting races. 3. #Commercial Viability: * Event Fee, Sponsorship and Exposure: While Monaco has prestige, it does not offer the same commercial benefits as other races. It pays the lowest event hosting fee of all races and the limited track space also means fewer advertising opportunities and fewer grandstand seats for spectators. 4. Alternative Locations: * More Dynamic Tracks: Many circuits provide more dynamic and exciting racing, with better facilities and infrastructure to handle modern F1 needs. Bigger commercial markets: Countries such as #India and #Indonesia with huge growing consumer markets and younger demographics are not currently being served. 5. #Diversity & #Inclusion: * Given its predominately elite, wealthy and white live audience, the exclusive nature of the race is not fit for purpose from a progressive sports rightsholder D&I perspective, where #F1 itself states, "Our mission is to unleash the full power of diversity wherever we go - removing barriers, nurturing talent, and inspiring change". Singapore has been hosting the Formula One Night Race since 2008. Some 260,000 spectators attended F1 in Singapore this year. September is the month of the Formula One (F1) in Singapore. I attended the Singapore F1 again after a break of a few years. The mood at this year’s Singapore F1 was electric. Busy. Fun. International. And, truly exciting. There is something about fast cars - speed, danger, suspense, pure excitement, and more. F1 cars race at a top speed of some 360km/hour, which is a little bit more than the Shinkansen Bullet Train. It is truly amazing to see drivers in their cars whiz past you, pure energy and so very noisy. They say, F1 races typically reach 140 decibels, just below the level that causes permanent hearing loss! A lot of things happen on a F1 circuit. Spectacular crashes. Cars which break down. Pit-stops which only take seconds to change the tires. Cars which overtake and are overtaken. After 62 laps going at over 300km/hour, the time difference between the first and second place are usually seconds, or less than a second! It’s an exciting, fast paced, very very interesting race. However sharp the bend, what matters is you are light and race out of the curve at full speed! The Alpine story as we have been writing it for 3 years is much bigger than just F1! This year, we open a new chapter in motorsport, entering the World Endurance Championship’s Hypercar category, with a new car, the A424, determined to be a bold challenger. Alpine is also helping Dacia prepare its car for the Paris-Dakar in 2025 and supporting Nissan in Formula E technology. And we’re building momentum developing Alpine as an entertainment platform: after having recently announced padel and sailing partnerships, we have more to come!
