History has many examples of bequests that have transformed the lives of individuals and communities, but very little is known about bequests. The next report from the illustrious @John McLeod at JBWere 'The Bequest Report' has been released 👇👇 . A must read and rather timely after the Philanthropy Australia conference this week. Looking back on my notes from the launch series..... I'd noted the change, via ABS data updates that the intergenerational wealth transfer had increased from $3.4 to $5.4 trillion, yet only 1% of this is directed toward charities through bequests. My notes from the event also underscored John stressing the importance of aligning organisational goals with bequestors' motivations. Addressing the "What's In It For Me" (WIIFM) factor is crucial to unlock this potential. How we answer the question, "What will be done with the bequest?" is pivotal for future impact. I can't wait to get into the detail. Thanks to the team JBWere for continuing to share impactful insights like this for the sector. Further to my other post, having read the full paper, I can confidently say it's a must-read for our sector. Another great report by JBWere 's John Mcleod and Kim Venter. It provides invaluable insights that can transform our approach to bequest strategies. A clear call to action is for us to look at our bequest strategies in light of this report. Discuss the findings with your board and share this critical information with families and donors who will find it enlightening. The diagram in the report, which challenges conventional notions of wealth, is particularly striking and thought-provoking. The CAF #WorldGivingIndex 2023 paints a mixed picture of the UK's generosity. We can take pride in our position as the 3rd most generous country for donating money, but overall the UK has slipped down the Index over the last decade. The UK’s ranks 58th in the world for volunteering and 112th for helping strangers, highlighting the need to build a more holistic culture of giving. Governments, funders, and civil society organisations all have unique roles to play. We can take inspiration from other countries, and we are calling on the Government to take a lead by introducing a national strategy for philanthropy and charitable giving. Australians are wonderfully generous 💞, and the not-for-profit sector benefits from it. According to McCridle's data of 2024, four in five Australians, or 84%, have given financially to charities or not-for-profits. It shows that there are over 59,000 registered charities that employ 1.42 million people and have an estimated 3.2 million volunteers in Australia. 75% of Australians give annually, and 24% give monthly. The interesting shift is from regular giving to spontaneous need-driven giving. This can be influenced by the fact that older generations prefer established charities while Gen Z favours start-up disrupters. Gen Y is the most neutral on giving to a start-up (44%) or an established charity (56%). From 2013 to 2022, there was a 40 percent drop in the number of Canadians who reported having six or more close friends. The latest CanadaHelps Giving Report reveals that our social bonds are contracting, which is affecting our levels of generosity, including donations to charities. This year, we celebrate 32 years of Nikau Foundation. Throughout that time, a lot has changed in the New Zealand philanthropy sector. Namely, how we think about giving.
