Yesterday, at the European Space Forum, our CEO Eva Berneke shared insights on the crucial role of sustainability in the rapidly evolving space industry - you can find the highlights, below ⬇ 🌍 Integration of sustainability: Eutelsat Group views sustainability as a cornerstone of our long-term strategy. 🛰️ Our unique position: Eutelsat Group operates a combined fleet of 36 GEO and more than 600 LEO satellites, positioning us as the world's first LEO-GEO operator and Europe's largest satellite operator. 📜 Need for harmonisation: a harmonized regulatory framework would improve the conduct of space operations globally, encourage further progress in sustainability and level the playing field across international operators. Europe needs to choose its space priorities wisely and work to boost capabilities or face suffering overreach. We have no industry that can put big ambitions into practice. My first article aimed at a non-specialised audience!   Here I try to explain some of the challenges that satellite operators face when two active satellites, or an active satellite and a piece of space debris, get too close to each other – we call this ‘conjunction’ or ‘close approach’. I also introduce some of the industry-led initiatives, like the Space Data Association and the Earth∞Space Sustainability Initiative, that try to address some of these challenges.   Space debris are an environmental issue for an environment most people are not familiar with – outer space.
