Today is World Sight Day, a day that focuses the world’s attention on the importance of eye care to ensure eye care is accessible, inclusive and affordable to everyone, everywhere. The focus of this year’s campaign is to encourage workplaces to have the vision of their employees checked. Because clear, healthy vision improves productivity, prevents workplace injury and improves employee wellbeing. Most of us will experience eye health issues at some point, but globally, over 1 billion people do not have access to eye care services – and this is not ok! Findings from Champion Health (2024) suggest that 43% of employees struggle with Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions, which can significantly impact workplace productivity and employee morale. Musculoskeletal pain results in various discomforts in muscles, bones, and joints, often caused from repetitive motions or poor posture. Here are a few simple tips to reduce MSK conditions in the workplace: 1️⃣Ensure your chair, desk and visual display unit (VDU) are set up correctly. Make sure your VDU is at arms length, 10 degrees below eye level. Choose a chair tat supports the natural curvature of your spine, and sit with the desk at elbow level. 2️⃣Maintain proper posture and movement. Lift objects using bent knees, while maintaining a straight back. Sit and stand tall with relaxed shoulders and a straight back, and remember to move frequently to prevent stiffness. 3️⃣Regular Physical Activity and Strengthening can help prevent occurrences of MSK conditions. Consider finding professionals to guide you through strength and resistance training to prevent injuries. Employees are the heartbeat of our organisations.
