What does the new schools bill mean for admissions? Sections 47 to 50 of the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill aims to enhance cooperation between schools, including academies, and local authorities (LAs) in England regarding admissions and place planning. They aim to do this by giving LAs more influence over admission to schools for whom they are not the ‘admission authority’ - in particular, academies. Our Legal Director in the education team, Joanna Goddard, explores the key points in these Sections below. Read more here: https://bit.ly/4fXgRO6 #Schools #Academies #SchoolAdmissions

#WyDeptEd seeks public comment on the Waiver of Section 421(b) of the General Education Provisions Act to the United States Department of Education to extend the period of availability for state administrative funds consolidated under ESEA section 8201. This is to address ongoing administrative costs and avoid diverting funds away from critical services for local education agencies (LEA), schools, students, teachers, and other educational staff. This is an interesting article from Lauren Brown thanks for sharing and highlighting it Georgina Durrant Having been that parent just over 12 months ago, forced into deregistering just to save our child's and our mental health rather than face the awful attendance officers at our local secondary academy, just a few weeks into Y7, this is a laudable aim that Dame de Souza has. It's currently very unachievable given the shocking state of the SEND system. My child is at an online school and children are continuing to join having been deregistered for similar reasons. Some are there and funded by LAs after long battles to get EOTAS as part of EHCPs or as alternative provision. Many would not want to go back. Many choose homeschooling and do it themselves or source local tutors or groups. So elective home education needs to remain an option for those who do elect voluntarily. School is not necessarily the best place for children, certainly not as things stand currently. Many children have been and continue to be traumatised by their school experiences. If the environment isn't right for the child then it can be disastrous for their learning and general wellbeing. A proper strategy, fully funded to deal with the backlog, whilst the general system is sorted out longer term is desperately needed. Things are getting worse not better. #SENDHelpNow #Education #SENDCrisis

Special education advocates have filed a new state complaint against Chicago Public Schools (CPS), urging the Illinois State Board of Education to intervene over ongoing transportation issues. For four consecutive years, CPS has struggled to provide reliable bus services for students with disabilities, a requirement under their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). The complaint, spearheaded by advocates Miriam Bhimani and Terri Smith, highlights a systemic failure to meet legal obligations, potentially denying students a free appropriate public education as guaranteed by federal law. To learn more about the challenges and the actions proposed by the state, read the full article here: [https://buff.ly/4eooDQA] #SpecialEducation #EducationEquity #ChicagoPublicSchools #StudentTransportation #IEP

There are many bills in the legislature this session aiming to address the high rate of teacher turnover Louisiana faces, but most do nothing that would actually address the issue. These bills would instead result in our children being educated by lower-quality teachers who are still unlikely to stay, with no promise of pay increases, just another one-time stipend. Stripping teacher certification requirements and other proposed bills will hurt our children, not help them.
How can Louisiana stop teachers from leaving? Lawmakers hope these bills will help.
