The number of trees planted in 2023 accumulated to an amazing total of 103,000! Planting for the Future’s goal is to work with industry, wildlife groups, the Outdoor Heritage Fund, and private landowners to create large-scale tree and shrub plantings on private land that will serve as habitat for future generations. 🐻 The brown bear finds itself in a constant threat due to man: both poaching and the loss of its habitat, caused by the expansion of human infrastructure, are putting its survival at risk. £25 million. 20 projects. 3,300 hectares of wildlife-friendly habitat. 🐦 This is what we’re announcing today through round one of the Species Survival Fund in partnership with The National Lottery Heritage Fund. From precious chalk streams to rare temperate rainforests, we’re awarding funding to projects across the country that are creating and restoring vital habitat for species. These include: 🦎 Groundwork: unlocking a thriving nature corridor across the Medlock Valley, and restoring a range of grassland, riverbank, wetland, and woodland habitats to support species such as willow tit, waxcaps, and rare great crested newts 🐭 Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust: restoring chalk rivers and associated wetland habitats across Hertfordshire, halting the decline of over 109 species including water voles (the UK’s fastest declining mammal) 🌳 The Woodland Trust: managing and restoring ancient woodland habitats within and around England's only temperate rainforest zones in the northwest and southwest, to increase species numbers The Species Survival Fund is a valuable example of how we’re working towards the government’s target of protecting 30% of land for nature by 2030. Endangered African elephants have been driven out of Uganda’s Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve for decades, and Space for Giants has been working tirelessly to restore and safeguard this landscape - to bring it back to life for all its dependents. The herd of four elephants, spotted earlier this year near the vicinity of Pian Upe, demonstrates the potential for the wilderness to rebound. It stands as a beacon of hope that restoring Pian Upe's balance is crucial for our world’s well-being. Elephants are the planet’s mega-engineers and critical conservation species, and it was magnificent to see them close by, especially in the first year of caring for Pian Upe. With your support, their comeback is possible even decades after extinction. When nature is nurtured, transformation occurs, including what we’ve witnessed with the return of the mighty tuskers, and, in the future, perhaps other extinct wildlife populations may return. Rare bumblebee numbers are rising in Shropshire following a successful project to restore old hay meadows. The National Trust is leading Stepping Stones, an initiative which aims to reconnect isolated patches of wildlife habitat across the Long Mynd and Stiperstones. Jinlye Meadows, on the Long Mynd, is now thriving with wildflowers and insects and as a result, the population of bilberry bumblebees has increased. Volunteers are now being asked to join the project to continue the work across the county. Yellow rattle seed is a critical plant species for creating meadows, and the Stepping Stones team are inviting people to help collect it from Jinlye in All Stretton on 9 and 10 July between 14:00 - 16:00 BST. The plant slows down the growth of grasses by attaching itself to the root system which makes diverse wildflower species grow. The Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA TFCA) is home to more than half of the world's Savannah elephant population, with an estimated 227,900 elephants as per the 2022 KAZA Elephant Survey bit.ly/3Ina0iu. While KAZA TFCA Partner States continue to celebrate this conservation triumph, the Partner States are also cognisant of the increased human-elephant conflict that comes with this success, as the TFCA is a coexistence landscape with a diverse range of wildlife, shared with 2.5–3 million people. To enable communities and elephants to co-exist, the KAZA TFCA Partners States working closely with front line communities, and development partners across the landscape, are striving to address the core causes of human-elephant conflict, putting in place resilient and healthy coexistence systems that are contributing to the preservation of both communities and elephants in the KAZA TFCA. #2024WorldElephantDay!

📣News from Mexico! 🦋📉 The presence of the eastern monarch butterfly population in Mexico’s oyamel fir forests this past winter was 59.3% less than the previous year, according to the most recent survey released by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Mexico. Monarch butterflies occupied 0.9 hectares, 1.31 less than the 2.21 hectares in the 2022-2023 overwintering season. This is the first time since the 2013-2014 overwintering season that the eastern monarch population has occupied less than one hectare.
