ESB has been granted development consent by The Scottish Government for the 96 MW Chleansaid Wind Farm in the Scottish Highlands. “We’re excited to bring Chleansaid into our portfolio of wind farms across the UK and Ireland,” said Duncan Scott, ESB Project Director. “Chleansaid Wind Farm will significantly benefit the energy decarbonisation of Scotland and the UK and will help boost the local economy. We estimate that £17.6 million will be spent in the Highlands and approximately £54.2 million in Scotland as a whole. The development phase will support approximately 52 jobs locally, and the operational phase will support 21 jobs locally.” The 16-turbine wind farm will be located on the Dalnessie Estate, 13 km to the north-east of Lairg in the Scottish Highlands, and will be capable of powering appoximately 54,000 homes per annum once operational. The Chleansaid wind project will also feature a 20 MW battery energy storage system. Construction of Chleansaid planned to begin in 2026, with a grid connection and the beginning of operations set for 2027. RSK Group supported the environmental impact assessment process, in addition to supporting the public consultation, public relations, planning, and contributed to the design of the site. Joe Somerville, RSK Project Manager, commented: “This project is anticipated to save up to 132,451 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent (CO₂e) per year and approximately 4,461,952 tonnes of CO₂e over its operating life. It should generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of 54,396 households in Scotland. “The on-site battery storage means it will also contribute to a reduction in energy curtailment and providing grid stability.” #cleanenergy

Equinor has won final support from the New York State Public Service Commission to start building the 810MW Empire Wind offshore wind farm. The commission yesterday awarded the Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity that authorises the start of construction on transmission facilities for the development. This is a crucial step for the scheme, which is due to start producing power in 2026. Molly Morris (pictured), president of Equinor Renewables Americas, said: "With this authorization in place, combined with other federal, state and local authorizations, critical construction can begin in Brooklyn that will help connect the 810MW of renewable energy produced by Empire Wind 1 to the New York City grid. Important news for grid infrastructure to unlock UK renewable generation as Ofgem has announced the green light for the UK's largest electricity transmission project to date—the Eastern Green Link 2 (EGL2). EGL2, from Aberdeenshire to East Yorkshire, will carry enough renewable electricity from offshore wind farms to power two million homes. In turn, it will improve energy security, transmission efficiency, and leave a long-lasting environmental legacy for nearby communities. The project is the first of four planned subsea electricity links, with eventual capacity aiming to power 7.5 million homes with renewable electricity. Noordzeker en Zeevonk II Win Tenders for Offshore Wind Farms IJmuiden Ver Alpha and Beta The largest licensing round for offshore wind farms in the Netherlands to date has been successfully concluded. Noordzeker, a consortium of ABP, APG, and SSE Renewables, is the winner of the permit for the IJmuiden Ver Alpha wind farm plot. This project emphasizes strengthening the North Sea's natural environment. Zeevonk II, a joint venture of Vattenfall and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), is the winner of the IJmuiden Ver Beta wind farm plot. This project focuses on the intelligent integration of the wind farm into the energy system. Both wind farms will produce renewable electricity, each with a capacity of at least 2 gigawatts (GW). SCOTLAND APPROVES EUROPE'S FIRST FLOATING WIND FARM Europe is set to get its first commercial-scale floating offshore wind farm after the pioneering Green Volt project received full planning approval from the Scottish government. The 560 MW Green Volt wind farm will feature up to 35 floating turbines operating around 35 miles off the Aberdeenshire coast in the North Sea. It is being developed by Flotation Energy and Vårgrønn, a joint venture between Eni and HitecVision. Once operational in 2029, Green Volt will directly supply renewable electricity to offshore oil and gas platforms, reducing emissions by 1 million tonnes per year. Excess power will be exported to the UK grid. Approval of the project has been hailed as "a significant milestone", positioning Scotland at the forefront of floating wind. UK developer Balance Power has received planning approval for a 99 MW / 99 MWh battery storage project in Iron Acton, South Gloucestershire. Oliver Pettersen MIET, Connections Manager at Balance Power, commented: “Securing planning permission for Iron Acton is a significant milestone and is set to make a sizeable impact on local clean energy reliability. “With extensive solar development in the Iron Acton area, this project will be pivotal for managing excess power generation and more broadly for balancing out the supply and demand of renewable energy, helping to reduce dependency on fossil fuels. “Due to the size and scale of the project, it also marks a big step forward for the UK’s transition to net zero, which depends upon battery storage projects that provide stability for a decarbonised grid. We’re grateful for the support from South Gloucestershire and the community – it’s due to our collective efforts and close collaboration that we’ve reached this brilliant outcome.” The approval from South Gloucestershire Council was granted through a delegated decision after an extensive community consultation process. Once operational, the Iron Acton BESS project will be capable of powering approximately 26,700 homes per annum and will comprise 19 battery units over a 2.3-hectare site. In addition to Iron Acton, Balance Power currently has close to 2 GW of BESS projects in development in the UK. #cleanenergy
