This summer we have 10 wonderful summer associates that have joined us for 10 weeks. The Summer Associates this week got to meet all other summer associates at Capital Group for a summit. We were having so much fun we didn't get a chance to take too many pictures and the one group picture we did take we are missing one of the Summer Associates :). More pictures to come throughout the summer. The Summer Associates heard from many senior leaders and during our business breakout session we spent time with the equity trading team understanding how that part of our business operates. We then had a trading floor tour and learned a lot about Capital Group. The Summer Associates are working on awesome projects and teams. They are working on Smart Automation, Data Engineering, Back-office Accounting Systems, AI and Testing, Investment Group Product Management, Architecture, Client Engineering, Investment Research Tech, Cloud, Networking and Sales and Investment Services to name a few. How do you approach personal growth and continuous learning? I approach growth and personal development by acting like a sponge when I'm around others. I love learning from people's experiences and perspectives and applying their lessons to my day-to-day. 2. What's the most significant lesson you've learned thus far, and how has it impacted you? The most valuable lesson I've learned so far in my life is the importance of developing good habits, eliminating bad ones, and the value of consistency. 3. What are your top three productivity tips for a successful workday? My three productivity tips for a successful day are to schedule out my responsibilities, cut out distractions, and focus on each task individually rather than multitask. 4. As a child, what career did you want to have when you “grew up?” When I was young, I wanted to be a marine biologist because of Shark Week. 5. What is something that brings you joy? Back in college, my whole world crashed when my dream internship got cancelled at the last minute. Rarely have I had more fun than in the last 10 weeks with this year's New Jersey State Policy Lab Summer Internship 2024 cohort. What a joy it has been to work with every single person involved in this program. These young scholars knocked it out of the park with their final presentations and I can't wait for you all to see their work on the New Jersey State Policy Lab website! Stay tuned for access to their full presentations on (in alphabetical order by last name): Ways to improve maternal health outcomes for Black birthing people, Ways to integrate more moderate exercise in K-12 schools, How to foster social connections between college students and adults 65 and older, How states might address the role of AI in K-12 classrooms, How U.S. immigration policy has and has not changed over the past handful of presidential administrations, The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on education for youth with learning disabilities in New Jersey, How New Jersey might approach increasing Medicaid enrollment for Hispanic adults, and Why Black adults in two Essex County, NJ municipalities have differences in chronic health conditions.

Thank you Stephen Moret from Strada and Matt Sigelman at The Burning Glass Institute for your research on underemployed college graduates. In Orange County California, we sit at about 20% underemployed but that is research from the universities themselves. I wonder if Strada and Burning Glass did research here, the statistics might be more in line with the 50% range they quote for the country at large? I'd curious to ask that question. Three things our three major universities, UC Irvine. Chapman University, and California State University, Fullerton can do better: 1. More links to internships with companies - this must be completely rethought for high level impact. 2. More early career guidance for students. The ratio of career guidance professionals to students is abysmal and needs a new strategy for investment. 3. Deeper partnerships with business to insure first time hires secure a solid entry level position. The education community can educate business to not always ask for experience but to train for experience and invest in the long term growth of an individual.
