For people with persistent pain, it can be hard to start and stick to engaging in physical activity. There might be many hindrances but social factors, like societal expectations, social support and social control, may play a significant role. Clinicians can optimise their prescription of exercise and physical activity for individuals with persistent pain by recognising and harnessing social support around the person; whilst minimising unhelpful societal expectations and negative social control. So, when it comes to encouraging exercise in paincare, don’t just consider “What can they do?” but “Who can they do it with?” You can explore exercise prescription and physical activity in paincare more by registering for the “Prescribing Exercise” module coming up in May!
