Thank you to UK Research and Innovation for the opportunity to speak about the various career transitions I have taken to get to the role that I currently hold in helping to grow the NE tech ecosystem; a role that has me pulling on knowledge and experiences from the diverse switches I have had the opportunity to make! Talking about your life and career choices is uncomfortable at the best of times, and on film even more so, but seeing my little girl's face at seeing 'mama on TV' makes it all the worth it. Also it's really exciting to show people a small snapshot of what the amazing facilities and work we are doing to build the tech ecosystem in the North East! Come visit us at at our Advanced Media Production Studio at PROTO , operated by Digital Catapult and Target3D Ltd | The Mechanics Behind Creativity; a space where companies can experiment with new virtual production technologies and receive support from us to adopt those advanced technologies. A few things I've learned from my career so far that didn't make the cut: 💡 You never know where your next career move/ project/ idea will come from. Talk to people, listen to stories, be curious... Not only is it fun, but you never know what 'next big thing' might pop up next by connecting the various dots you build. 💡 People make changes in their career for all sorts of reasons, and it usually involves a combination of factors such as family, opportunity, hard work, and sometimes just being in the right place at the right time! 💡 Empathy is key. Spending time with a colleague or a team member to understand who they are, what drives them, and what is challenging for them and then finding ways to support them (formal or informal) is more valuable that anyone can realise. 💡 Always serve your argument with your front foot, and that it's incredibly important to be intellectually generous - collaboration is the only way we are going to solve those grand challenges!

It has been almost a month since I took on the role as #DeanofStudents at Lenoir Rhyne University and I am continuing to learn and enjoy the journey. Many folks have reached out to me and asked if it has been a difficult transition… my answer has been “not difficult, but most certainly complex.” Being a DoS is probably one of the most complex positions on a college campus due to the position having to navigate the experience and expectations of students, staff, faculty, the surrounding community and senior level administrators. In my short month, I’ve learned the following: 1. Be visible and show up. The students and campus notice and appreciates it. When students know that you care, the tough conversations are a bit easier. 2. Set boundaries and expectations fast. It is easier to loosen up on those expectations, but it is much harder to tighten. Mean what you say, and make it happen. 3. Listen! Spend as much time as possible listening to the stories of others, connecting with colleagues, and getting in front of student groups, leaders, and community members. 4. Give yourself grace. You will not be able to fix everything immediately and it can sometimes feel as if you’re starting a ton, but you are not gaining results. Remember it’s a long game! This has been an amazing journey and I am super excited to be at a place that is innovative and invested in the student experience. On 'Labor Day' 2023, I will share some thoughts on important 'work' for both undergraduate students and members of higher education communities. College represents a crucial developmental phase in undergraduates' lives. It is a salient time for exploration and growth across all domains of human development. Instead of merely emphasizing a mechanical act of ‘box checking’ in meeting specifications of this or that, -let's help instill a deep contextual value and encourage undergraduates, as well as each other, to embrace a rich tapestry of subjects, experiences, and passions during this stage of all our lives and context. It is through these practices and thoughtful discernment that we all discover true interests, both academically and otherwise, ultimately paving a path towards alignment, service, and a life of purpose, fulfillment, and meaning. 💗
