The Justdiggit project in Arusha, Tanzania, is a powerful testament to the positive changes that can occur when communities and nature work together. Through their innovative rainwater harvesting techniques, such as the digging of over 29,000 water bunds, and the practice of Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration, which has regenerated more than 80,000 trees, the project is not only fighting desertification but also enhancing the local microclimate and biodiversity! In a region where drought and insufficient pasture are significant challenges, the Justdiggit initiative is making strides in restoring agricultural and communal grazing lands. Their work has a broader impact on the climate as well, as the regreening efforts help to cool the area, create clouds, and increase the chance of rain. This is crucial for restoring the water cycle and advancing the fight against the global climate crisis. AND, the project has empowered over 7,500 households through training in regreening techniques, fostering socio-economic change and increasing drought resilience. This educational approach is key to ensuring the long-term success and sustainability of the project. It's a celebration of community, innovation, and the healing power of nature, all coming together to create a greener, more sustainable world!

Smart and Sustainable

November's tree of the month was Markhamia Lutea, aka Nile tulip, Nile trumpet or Siala tree, and they've been planted in partnership with the Plant to Stop Poverty Project in Tanzania. ⁠ Markhamia Lutea is a fast-growing, small evergreen tree; which grows up to 10 to 15 metres tall, however, some have been reported to reach a massive 40 metres. Across its lifetime, a Markhamia Lutea will offset 9,550 Kg of CO2 on average and thanks to it being climatic resilient, it’s a great tree for quick restoration of highly destroyed areas of forest. The bole can reach up to 70 cm in diameter and it can be found in East Africa: in Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania, growing in savanna and montane forests. Its roots, bark and leaves are used in traditional medicine and it’s an important agroforestry tree where it’s used as a shade tree for crops. Currently, two main projects are underway in the Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa districts, showing apparent progress. Simple solutions for critical challenges.

It always puts a smile on our faces when we see one of our flagship portfolio partners receive public recognition. This time, it is the turn of Indus Delta Capital – the developer of the Delta Blue Carbon mangrove restoration project. Earlier this year, Mongabay wrote a positive mangrove story. Contrary to global trends, Pakistan’s mangrove forests are growing. With their huge capacity for carbon capture and positive influence on biodiversity, these coastal trees are a strong environmental asset. Mongabay highlights the role of Indus Delta Capital in achieving Pakistan’s mangrove successes. Since its inception, the Delta Blue Carbon project has planted nearly 74,000 hectares of mangrove saplings and expects to sequester 142 million tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere throughout its lifespan. Over 4,000 Trees Planted in Test Phase of Eco Balance Nkambe River Revival Project The fight for Nkambe's river has taken a massive leap forward! Ecological Balance Cameroon, alongside the Nkambe council, and the dedicated Ngwayu community, have successfully completed the first phase of a test tree planting activity. This marks a significant milestone in the Nkambe River Revival Project, bringing hope for the region's vital water source. Over 4,000 trees of diverse species have been planted across 1,575 square meters at the Ngwayu water catchment area, utilizing the innovative Miyawaki method of reforestation. This method, renowned for fostering rapid growth, vibrant biodiversity, and improved soil health, holds immense promise for the project's success. This initial planting serves a dual purpose: testing the ideal tree species for the local environment and showcasing the power of the Miyawaki method. Together with communities, we are rewriting the narrative for Nkambe's environment. Let us watch Nkambe's water source flourish once again!
