Why planting mangroves is not enough.  point_right Following the deadly tsunami 20 years ago, Ministry of environment, Sri Lanka led a mass-drive to plant mangroves, but only around 3% of the planted saplings survived. The country then changed tactics – from planting mangroves to nurturing them. By creating the right conditions for mangroves to thrive, the plants started regenerating naturally. Ecosystem restoration on the island is now science-driven, co-led by local communities, and focused on restoring the natural balance in the ecosystem. Since then, the country has restored 500 hectares of mangroves, aiming to restore 10,000 hectares by 2030. Congratulations to “Mangrove Regeneration in Sri Lanka” for their remarkable #GenerationRestoration efforts – a valuable example for other countries to follow: https://lnkd.in/dHSqvb5z

Further improvement of this programme is possible if rating and ranking of mangrove plant species is carried out on the basis of its ecosystem services and on the basis of its capacity to provide food to the animal biodiversity sll round the year.

Understanding the importance of mangroves can rally communities to conserve them, serving as a natural defense against rising sea levels.

This example inspires! A lot of knowledge from experience.

Good example of ecosystem restoration. Inspiring to neighbouring countries like India….
