UNICEF #NIGERIA Social Policy Team is weaving a narrative of resilience and hope. Beyond the policy papers, our work on local governance and social protection has become a lifeline for families, particularly those shouldering the additional financial burdens associated with providing for the nutrition, education, health, and protection needs of their children. The stark reality is that this financial strain disproportionately affects poor and vulnerable households living below the poverty line, lacking access to vital services and information. Witnessing the challenges faced by these families inspired us to act. We embarked on a groundbreaking journey, supporting the domestication of social protection policy in over 15 states out of Nigeria's 36 states. The transformative impact of our work in supporting social protection policy domestication has led to the establishment of various Cash Plus Programme. The cash plus programme has linked beneficiaries to services and provided cash to more than 1 million children. This initiative stands as a beacon of relief for over a million children and their families. It's a testament to the transformative power of translating policies into tangible, everyday solutions that address the unique struggles faced by each household. As we celebrate these victories, we remain dedicated to the vision of a Universal Child Grant, ensuring that no child is left behind and that families, regardless of their economic status, have the support they need to nurture the potential within each child. Resource Mobilisation is not easy. I failed for three straight years, not being able to secure a single dollar despite running one of the most vulnerable programmes in Kenya, supporting practically poor people living in depriving informal settlements or slums. Yet resource Mobilisation is also doable and thrilling. It is worth pursuing, especially for people infatuated with creating evidence-based change in their communities. My repeated failure was tragic and condescending because our organization was changing lives, providing home-based care for people living with HIV/AIDs and vulnerable people, providing education for orphans and strengthening livelihood for people living on less than a dollar a day. I met potential donors and tried to touch their emotions and emotions while explaining the conditions of the orphans we were helping. Nothing changed. Fundraising and Resource Mobilisation success has nothing to do with the quality or value of what you're doing, but more to do with how you package and communicate your social adventure to potential donors, given that thousands of people are doing almost similar thing and competing for the intractable sources of resources. As many of you may have seen in my posts, Resource Mobilisation needs skills and knowledge which may not necessarily require complicated academic adventure. Yet must encompass research and application of clinical knowledge. Studies show that successful Resource Mobilisation is determined by the following imperatives: 1. Organizational Capacity. 2. Operational Capacity. 3. Institutional Capacity. The totality of the three-above imperatives should culminate in the development of Result-based Fundraising Strategy with monitorable framework. Our children hit puberty earlier and they aren't ready. They don't know what is happening to their bodies, and they even think they are sick or are going to die when they see the blood that is coming out of their bodies. So? Talk to children about puberty and period, and the sooner the better. It is absolutely necessary that they are ready and equipped with the tools they need to understand what is happening to their bodies and effectively and safely manage their first period. ⚡ More than just clarification, this post is a wake-up call from mc2h foundation, reminding us all of the alarming findings of the “State of Learning Poverty: 2022 Update” published by the World Bank, UNESCO and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation among others.   Their authoritative report raises the warning flag that 7 out of 10 children in low- and middle-income countries can’t read or write by the age of 10, with that rising to 9 out of 10 in Africa.   Those are frightening figures considering that literacy is the main gateway to learning – and out of poverty.   We at the mc2h foundation and our partners are doing everything we can to change that. Today, together with Ministry of Finance, the National Development Planning Commission, development partners and the private sector, UNICEF presented its annual analysis of how and how well the national budget of Ghana supports and prioritizes the needs and wellbeing of children. Today’s launch of the UNICEF Budget Briefs and Roundtable event also enabled a deeper reflection into the overall progress made by Ghana to advance specific Sustainable Development Goals impacting children. Across the world, including in Ghana, children today live in a world impacted by the multifaceted effects of several crises - including global heating, destabilizing conflicts and related humanitarian spillover, economic hardship and severe learning loss in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic - which compound already difficult development challenges and delay SDG attainment. During this period, the importance of safeguarding social sector expenditure and protecting the most-vulnerable, including children, cannot be overestimated. In particular, it requires us to urgently identify and increase fiscal investments benefitting children. At UNICEF, we prioritize our support to strengthen Ghana’s public financial management system - a role identified under Article 4 of Convention on the Rights of the Child. In this regard, we work with the government, civil society and the private sector to improve accountability and help ensure that children's interests are at the core of budgetary decision making. Investing in children is not only a moral imperative but also makes sense economically – with several of the most bankable social investments being programmes focused on early childhood development, nutrition and immunization – all of which strengthen human capital accumulation and set the course for near future prosperity. The Budget Briefs disseminated today analyse budget allocation and execution across the sectors such as education, health, social and child protection, water and sanitation. They also offer insights into the efficiency, equity and adequacy of government spending, and synthesize information so that it may be understood readily by diverse stakeholders. Happening Now: Additionally, we have incorporated campaigns that allude to the well-being of children. Some of these have included the It Takes a World to End Violence (ITAWE- against Children Campaign which we embarked on in 2O17. By working in collaboration with different stakeholders, we influenced policy changes, harmful social norms, strengthened systems and structures to prevent, respond to child abuse, and built the capacity of children to advocate for their protection. As a result, World Vision Uganda registered a reduction in the prevalence of child marriages, violence against children in schools, and child sacrifice in areas of operation.  Our Mid–Term Evaluation Report 2023 also showed that 54.4% of parents and community members who believed in child sacrifice had reduced in comparison to the initial 14.8% at the baseline. In the same strides, 48 adolescent groups were established and are advocating for an end to violence against children. The report further shows a significant reduction in child marriages from 11.9% at baseline to 1.9%. This is way below the Violence Against Children Survey Report which indicates that 29.6% of girls and 6.7% of boys are married. Our work to prevent violence against children showed us that poverty and hunger were among the root causes of violence.
