This week, I hosted a Roundtable at the Scottish Parliament to discuss recommendations for ending forced marriage. We identified gaps in Scotland's legal framework and gathered ideas for improvement. This event was a milestone for Universal Truth in our mission to end forced marriage and honour-based violence among ethnic minority women. Thank you to everyone who attended; your engagement was fantastic and highlighted the urgent need to address this often-overlooked issue. A special thanks to Pam Gosal MSP for sponsoring this Roundtable. I look forward to working with you to make a positive difference. And thank you to The Robertson Trust for their kind donation. Stay tuned for the release of our recommendation paper next week. #EndForcedMarriage #HonourBasedViolence #UniversalTruth #ScottishParliament #EthnicMinorityWomen #LegislativeReform #HumanRights #SocialJustice #EqualityForAll

Many children of sex workers face a world of constant uncertainty. Shuffled between caregivers and facing an ever-present threat of separation, they are sometimes denied stability. Imagine the fear of a child who can't depend on the adults who are supposed to provide love and safety. Their most basic needs are ignored, leaving them vulnerable to neglect, abuse, and the deep wounds of trauma. But at Global Health Promise, we believe a different future is possible. Our programs focus on supporting mothers and ensuring families stay together. This means: • Creating Stability: Providing resources to help mothers care for their children consistently. • Fostering Healthy Bonds: Offering support to nurture strong parent-child relationships. • Breaking Cycles: Preventing the lasting damage caused by instability and trauma. Join us in protecting children and keeping families intact. Your donation makes a profound difference. Dowry is a harmful practice where the family of the bride is required to provide significant gifts or money to the groom's family upon marriage. This practice perpetuates gender inequality, as it often leads to financial exploitation, emotional abuse, and even violence against women. Dowry-related violence is a form of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) that can have devastating consequences for victims. Supporting someone affected by dowry is crucial for their well-being and empowerment. It involves providing emotional support, access to resources, and advocating for their rights. By standing in solidarity with survivors, we send a powerful message that such practices are unacceptable and must be eradicated. Let's raise awareness about dowry-related SGBV, support survivors, and work towards creating a society where all individuals are treated with dignity and respect. #EndDowryViolence #SupportSurvivors #GenderEquality #BreakTheCycle #SGBVAwareness Learn more at: https://lnkd.in/gnkuzXRk . . #NGO #NonProfit #Charity #HumanRights #SupportNGO #NGOWork #SocialJustice #NGOImpact #Volunteer #CommunitySupport #Survivor #EndViolence #BreakTheSilence #SupportSurvivors #SpeakOut #EmpowerSurvivors #HealingJourney #StrengthInSurvivors #ViolenceAwareness #Recovery

“Why don’t you want to file a legal complaint?” The journey to justice for a survivor of sexual and gender-based violence, particularly through traditional legal pathways, is marked by several challenges, including: 👉🏽 Social stigma and a lack of trust; 👉🏽 Long-drawn, complex, mostly unfamiliar proceedings that often take away the agency of individuals; 👉🏽 Repeatedly needing to recount traumatic events in detail, with proceedings depending on survivors’ ability to describe events that they may not want to or be able to remember fully; 👉🏽 Lack of psycho-social support from a system that exacerbates trauma in the pursuit of justice. Tune into the complete episode to hear about retraumatisation of victims in the journey to justice, and the need for survivor-centric, trauma-informed services that prioritise survivors’ well-being and agency. Link to the episode in comments. Father, Disability and Family Violence Practice Leader, and advocate for addressing Gender-Based Violence and holding men accountable for their use of violence
From Djirra- Sharing stories, finding solutions, please see the below link to support: Help Aboriginal women escaping family violence Australia is facing a national crisis of violence against women. Here in Victoria, Aboriginal women are 45 times more likely to experience family violence than other women. And the number of Aboriginal women seeking support continues to rise – Djirra experienced a 22% surge in demand in the first three months of this year alone. While violence against Aboriginal women is increasing, and we are already devastatingly over-represented in family and sexual violence statistics, our frontline services and community-led solutions remain critically underfunded. This is why we URGENTLY need your help with a tax-deductible donation this end of financial year https://lnkd.in/gmS2XXbp

Gender is not a statutory factor for consideration before a court on divorce. However, over time, family dynamic stereotypes seem to have altered people’s perceptions and limited this to gender alone. It is always worth reminding ourselves of the three fundamental principles when assessing how to divide financial assets upon a divorce: *Needs *Compensation and *Sharing We must also remember the broad discretion afforded to the Judiciary and the underlying objection of achieving fairness throughout. I often reflect on Lord Nicholls comment in the leading case of White v White [2000] UKHL 54: “Fairness, like beauty, lies in the eye of the beholder”. This only reiterates the important role #FamilyLawyers play when navigating such a discretionary system. Please take some time to read my colleague Hannah Conway’s article where the various outcomes for family disputes is explored further. #ThursdayThought
There is often a perception that the law on divorce in the UK favours the female party. This could be due to the increase in and awareness of charities such as Fathers4Justice who are campaigning for father’s rights with a particular emphasis on children being separated from their fathers. It may also be the changing family dynamic and the shift towards equality within the home. Wherever the reason, is there any truth in divorce favouring women over men? Hannah Conway explains more. https://loom.ly/VOH_0t4

Yet again, a brilliant piece by our colleague Vu Le, whose work to expose the underlying dynamics in the non-profit sector and philanthropy fields has been consistently piercing, honest, and on point. Here, thanks to Marla's sharing with us is his exposé on the gendered power plays that continue to define the framework betweeen those who have the money and those who have to raise the money. https://lnkd.in/epBv43TU
“When examined through the lens of gender and patriarchy, many of our traditional philosophies and practices around fundraising are extremely problematic. Fundraisers, who are mostly women, are encouraged to cater to donors and funders, with the most powerful ones tending to be men. We use gross language like ‘dating your donors’ or ‘courting donors.’ We expect fundraisers, who are again mostly women, to endure horrible behaviors from donors, who again are often men, for the sake of meeting fundraising goals”

Loving all the posts on violence against women across LinkedIn. My FB memories tell me that 10 years ago I was working on project with two Iranian refugee women who'd been photographers before they'd lost everything when fleeing violence. I'd set up a photo shoot at a local men's shed and had a camera donated for the cause. The women were nervous but excited about the opportunity (the first since leaving Iran). When we arrived, we were greeted by wolf whistles from the men. A good way to let women know they are not safe or welcome in this 'men's' space. There are so many ways women are disrespected. The org I was doing this job for was a job I took when desperate for income and agreed to a 30% fee reduction. They also decided at the end of the job, not to pay for the last 2 weeks of work, meaning I couldn't pay my childcare bill or my mortgage. The problem of respect for women is at all levels - in community spaces, on the street, in workplaces and in families. It's a problem with you, with me, with all of us and how we choose to behave towards each other. Changing this means effective education, just policing, stable childhoods, thriving communities, compassionate care, a fair economy, responsible government, flourishing and fair business. We have the solutions and there are many grassroots organisations like mine implementing those solutions. We can't do it alone. #violenceaaginstwomen #enoughisenough #familyviolence #respectwomen #wholeofcommunityapproches #grassrootssolutions #fundus #donatenow #marchforwomen #nextsteps #innovationapproaches #wholisticapproches #traumarecovery #traumasensitive
