International SEEnergy 2024 featured the latest topics on the green transition and sustainability, attracting international hosts and professionals from countries all over Europe. It also welcomed a French vice president of EDF Renouvelables in Europe, Pierre-Arthur Lestrade, who shared firsthand insights into the current situation, future trends, and innovative solutions for wind energy in France. This significant visit brought profound knowledge and expertise to the table. We heard detailed accounts of how wind energy is being developed and implemented in France and Croatia, providing valuable lessons and inspiration. The event also included Krištof Zupančič, a speaker from the Slovenian Ministry of the Environment, Climate, and Energy, and Tea Dabić, a legal expert from OIE Croatia , which further enriched the discussions. Their useful lectures were followed by a more than 2-hour-long discussion that united numerous experts from across Europe. This session facilitated a rich exchange of interesting ideas and best practices. A real privilege to attend the 2024 European Energy Policy Conference last week, hosted by Copenhagen Business School in collaboration with University of Cambridge, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and DTU - Technical University of Denmark. Great to catch up with Andrew Garrick PhD and Amanda Gregor as well. Some fascinating presentations and discussions on the challenges of upgrading electricity grids across North American and European state boundaries; the relative merits of “UK CfDs” versus “European CfDs”; lowest total cost (marginal) curtailment of renewables and many other topics. All in all, a good test of the grey matter - and a great opportunity for Daniel Gear and I to discuss findings from our recent Just Transition report (see previous posts) with some leading thinkers in energy policy. It’s clear that "Just Transition" means different things in different places: in some areas its overwhelmingly about replacing oil and gas jobs, and in others (like Shetland) the question “Who should benefit from the resources of a place?” is more critical. The Voar view is that for the energy transition to be fair as well as fast, communities hosting energy projects need to receive a fair share of the resource value - and what that looks like will vary across countries, sectors and projects. Nordic solutions will not only benefit the Nordic Region. They will benefit the whole world. “It’s important that the Nordic countries continue to work closely together on the electricity market, security of supply in the energy system, and the role of hydrogen in the energy transition,” said Ebba Busch, Swedish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy and Industry, when the Swedish Presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers gathered the Nordic energy ministers to discuss opportunities for energy cooperation. During the meeting, the energy ministers emphasised that Nordic collaboration on green energy solutions do not only benefit the climate and security of supply – it also provides business opportunities for Nordic companies in the global market, where the Nordic brand is strong. In addition, hydrogen-based innovations were highlighted as key in the energy transition, especially for e.g., the transport sector. A couple of weeks ago, we conducted our annual Central European Energy Practice Area meeting in Prague with ~200 colleagues - here are my key takeaways: 𝐀𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐬. Skill demands in the energy industry have been changing drastically: from crisis management and gas expertise in 22/23 to growth-oriented expertise in the heating transition, flexibility, etc. in 24/25 (to name a few). Going forward, adaptiveness remains a core success skill in this complex market. 𝐌𝐢𝐝-𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬. Long-term visions of a decarbonized energy future are valuable goalposts for the energy transition. However, breaking down these visions and coming up with decisive plans for the mid-term will make all the difference between surviving and thriving on the way to decarbonization. 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐞. At the meeting, we conducted intense debates on controversial topics, including the roles of natural gas/LNG, H2, and lignite in the energy transition. Continuously challenging our viewpoints drives progress and elicits the development of solutions that stand the test of reality. Keeping these insights in mind, I can't wait for the challenges ahead! #BCG #EnergyinCE #EnergyTransformation
