Founder at NXTGEN Clean Energy Solutions |Sustainability Consulting + Solar + Wind + Battery Storage + Electric Vehicle Charging + Solar Light Poles | Helping businesses improve the bottom line and the environment
Greensburg: From Tragedy to Clean Energy Leadership On May 4, 2007, a devastating tornado struck Greensburg, Kansas, destroying most of the town. While some homes on the outskirts were salvageable, the town's core was left in ruins. Amidst the debris, the 1,400 residents faced the daunting task of rebuilding their lives and community. Rather than simply restore what was lost, Greensburg chose to reinvent itself as a pioneer in clean energy. With guidance from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), a division of the Department of Energy, residents and businesses learned about the long-term savings of energy-efficient upgrades like heat pumps, solar panels, and efficient windows. Many took this advice to heart, focusing on energy efficiency and tornado-resistant construction. Today, Greensburg is a model of sustainability: Wind Energy: Ten wind turbines generate 100% of the town's electricity. Solar Power: Numerous buildings are equipped with solar panels. LED Lighting: The town installed LED streetlights, a cutting-edge technology at the time that is now widespread. Greensburg’s story is a testament to resilience and innovation, turning a disaster into an opportunity for sustainable growth and energy independence. This past week Haugland Group LLC proudly published an advertorial in Newsday on May 26, 2024, which you can view here: https://lnkd.in/e-Eszn8E. This piece was written to showcase the ongoing progress across Long Island, enhancing our economic, environmental, and energy future. It emphasizes the successful construction and launch of the South Fork Wind project, highlighting its profound impact on communities across Long Island. The successful realization of the South Fork Wind project, along with other vital initiatives across the region, has been made possible through the collective commitment of our local communities, our diligent union workforce, along with vital support from New York State agencies such as NYSERDA and the NY Public Service Commission. Additionally, the forward-thinking leadership from private sector partners like Ørsted and Eversource Energy has been instrumental. The feature in Newsday, complement insights from other articles published by Haugland Group LLC as referenced here: https://lnkd.in/e4kqnUAj and here: https://lnkd.in/ec6rq4Px. They underscore not only the progress on key projects but also the significance of nurturing a critically skilled workforce essential for sustaining this positive momentum. As we often say at Haugland Group, "a rising tide lifts all boats." Initiatives like South Fork Wind and Sunrise Wind are not just raising the tide but also creating pathways for it, setting the stage for all Long Islanders to thrive in its wake. #poweringpeopleandprogress #buildinglongislandsfuture #unionstrong #hauglandgroup

Too few stakeholders in and advocates of #cleanenergy understand that battles over if and how renewable energy projects get built are largely fought in the arenas of #strategiccommunications and public opinion. That's one reason I'm proud that Redwood Climate Communications is partnering with Climate Action Rhode Island (CARI) on their #YestoWind campaign of education, advocacy, and direct action. The clean energy that will be produced by the Revolution Wind offshore wind project will provide clean electricity to thousands of households in New England, and a lawsuit brought by a small group of wealthy property owners because they don't like turbines 13 miles offshore in "their" ocean view should not block that benefit. If you're a resident of Rhode Island or Connecticut, sign the petition to prevent this lawsuit from blocking clean energy production and #climateprogress. If you live elsewhere in the U.S., raise your voice against misinformation and in support of responsible #cleanenergy projects that will benefit your community! For every NIMBY that becomes a YIMBY, we're one step closer to a zero-carbon future. p.s. I'd love to talk about our work with CARI and the need for more coordinated, proactive, strategic communications by renewables developers and allies at #ClimateWeekNYC!
Last night, one of our Account Directors Jonaliza D. Ceklic joined fellow Climate Action Rhode Island activists and other clean energy advocates at a demonstration in Newport, RI. Together, they stood united for the city’s clean energy future, raising their voices in support of offshore wind development and demanding that the The Preservation Society of Newport County drop its baseless lawsuit, which aims to halt this critical progress. As a strategic comms firm committed to climate progress, we are proud to work pro bono alongside CARI to defend Rhode Island’s clean energy goals. This fight is about more than just a legal battle—it’s about protecting our future, our planet, and ensuring that renewable energy is a reality for generations to come. Join us in taking a stand and sign the petition to say #YesToWind 👉https://lnkd.in/e6dd4rP9 For more on this developing story, check out Jael Holzman's recent reporting on conflicts over renewables in Heatmap News: https://lnkd.in/ehWgeXxc

Community Engagement Manager, Renewable Energy, Climate Action, Regional Regeneration, former Community Independent Candidate for Calare, Regenerative small-farmer, Regional economic diversification
Great to hear the perspective of a (10 year) neighbour of a wind farm. Particularly around the need for the whole community to benefit, not just hosts and neighbours. We're starting to see this more and more where renewable energy is understood to be an opportunity for broad regional development, not just a series of transactions between a small number of parties.
What's it like being a neighbour of a wind farm? Our board member Dimity Taylor shares her experience in this great feature by The Australian.

🌿 #GovenorJoshShapiro (#pennsylvania) is leading the charge for cleaner energy with the introduction of the Pennsylvania Climate Emissions Reduction (#PACER) Initiative, aimed at curbing #carbonemissions from #powerplants and boosting #renewables. Backed by estimates of $250 million in savings over five years and the creation of 14,500 jobs, this initiative reflects a bold step towards a greener future. The plan prioritizes benefits for Pennsylvanians, with 70% of funds raised going towards electricity bill rebates and investments in #cleanenergy and #energyefficiency. Additionally, Shapiro proposes updating the state's #renewableenergy goals, aiming for 35% clean energy by 2035. While some advocate for joining the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (#RGGI), Shapiro's approach demonstrates a commitment to tailored solutions for energy needs. With bipartisan support, this initiative sets a promising precedent for sustainable growth and environmental stewardship 🌱🔌

Like many people, I've been feeling bittersweet about winter this February—grateful to get outside for fabulous skiing at Saddleback Mountain in Maine, but also sad and worried for the health of our planet. The snow base was not nearly as deep as it should be this time of year, with short flurries replacing the powder dumps of seasons past. But in the face of these often overwhelming, and uncomfortably visible, signs of climate change, I am prouder than ever of the work that New England for Offshore Wind is doing to mitigate climate impacts while ensuring that the economic benefits of the clean energy transition are equitably distributed. As my colleague, Jennifer Delony, recently wrote, now is the opportune time to turn our fear energy into action energy (Read the post: tinyurl.com/zy5evbcm). In that same vein, I want to tell you about some of the recent developments in offshore wind that are bringing much-needed good news—and how you can get involved. This month, the State of Maine took a crucial step, due in no small part to the tireless educational efforts of the NE4OSW Maine State Committee. Gov. Janet Mills announced Sears Island in Searsport, ME, as the State's preferred site for a world-class floating offshore wind port that will be the first of its kind on the East Coast. ⭐Why is this so important? The facility will manufacture floating foundations and stage and assemble turbines components, all while creating thousands of local and family-sustaining union jobs for Maine workers. In addition, the developer building the port could very likely sign a Community Benefits Agreement (CBA) with Searsport, further revitalizing the town’s economy with infrastructure projects and funds for public services and workforce training. In a time when supply chain uncertainty is dealing real damage to President Biden's goal of 30GW of installed offshore wind by 2030 (see Oceantic.org’s new report), Maine’s action on port development signals a recognition of offshore wind as a game-changing source of clean energy and economic benefits. I also want to point out the recent (and positive!) paradigm shift that has allowed us to reach this point. For so many years, climate advocates fought against proposed infrastructure projects that threatened our environment and health. Now, we are in an era where clean energy infrastructure projects are an accessible and necessary part of reaching our climate goals. We can and must say YES to projects like the Maine floating wind port that will fight climate change and protect our planet. To learn more about our coalition of environmental nonprofits, labor unions, educational institutions, and business associations, check out NE4OSW.org. And stay tuned for an upcoming webinar series from us about CBAs and how they can transform communities that host offshore wind infrastructure. Here’s to making big choices, spreading the word, and to resoundingly saying YES to offshore wind in 2024.
