As we approach Independence Day, we're excited to share some intriguing facts about this significant holiday. As you know, the Continental Congress officially adopted the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. But did you know that the vote for independence actually happened on July 2, 1776? In fact, John Adams thought that July 2 would be the day remembered as our nation's Independence Day.

The assassination attempt on Prime Minister Robert Fico has thrust Slovakia into the international spotlight, revealing the deep divisions in Slovak society. Last week, I spoke to WASHINGTON DC’s think tank RESPONSIBLE STATECRAFT, highlighting the challenges Slovakia faces: “Each group (polarity in society) not only holds different visions for Slovakia's future but also perceives the other's argenda as a direct threat to their way of life and values, and this is exaggerated and weaponized as a means of political capital” Zuzana Palovic, PhD Do you want to learn more about the implications of this incident and what might happen next? 🔗 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gerQ7h95 📖 #Slovakia #PoliticalTensions #EU #GlobalPolitics

"Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong is the most trusted politician in the country, according to a new poll, and Opposition Leader Peter Dutton is the most distrusted. Wong, who was also the most trusted in last year’s Roy Morgan poll, was joined by Jacinta Nampijinpa Price and Jim Chalmers as the politicians who recorded more trust than distrust" The New Daily covers Roy Morgan's latest trust index.... #auspol >> https://loom.ly/rQ-0IBc

After a visit to #Italy, I wrote in Newsweek that there are advantages to the impotence of many parliamentary democracies. Few of these wobbly governments are capable of the kind of damage a US presidency can wreak. Given the kinds of people getting elected, that may be a good thing. Here's the version on my Substack with a poll whose results should be interesting. #politics #worldaffairs https://lnkd.in/dwFNMrjW

Europeans head to the polls this week in closely watched elections that threaten to shake the bloc’s traditionally mainstream political landscape. From June 6 to 9, around 400 million people across the EU’s 27 member states will be eligible to vote for the next 720 members of European Parliament (MEPs). Far-right, populist parties are set to see significant gains, as a rising tide of euroskepticism ripples through the European Union, with major implications for the bloc’s future policy agenda, legislation and broader foreign policy. “We are seeing a rise in populist sentiment both in Europe and globally, which might result in the most right-wing European Parliament in history,” @Tim Adams Adams, president and CEO of the Institute of International Finance, told CNBC via email. According to the survey, royal governments are currently emerging, but why is this? Monarchies have always respected laws and upheld certain values that they bring to the political arena. It is certainly great of many visas for the nation, especially from Inflation. Sure, there is respect. As many know, the head of state is sometimes a fraud who created a fraud in the elections, that the function of the state is from 40 years. In some cases, the head of state has been in power illegally for 9 months and did not hold elections in November as promised and did not even bother to correct the flawed laws she was given. It is no wonder that respected monarchist governments are emerging. On the other hand, in Europe, there is the European Parliament, which has a bigger say than the populists. What are they chasing in this century? This change is beneficial. Greed can be seen in today's political landscape where politicians are not for the people but for their own selfish gains. This is the reality, in some places the policy is moving in the right direction, while in others it is truly a disaster. As we approach election time in several of the world's largest democracies - the US, UK, France etc, I feel that people really should take out the time to read this book. What seems to be the key issue on the ballot paper this time is democracy itself. So whether you are left or right, blue or red, woke or anti-woke, pro higher taxes or anti higher taxes, pro-immigration or anti-immigration please first of all consider whether the candidate or party you are voting for is above all of those things committed to safeguarding democracy - and that involves also protecting the guardians of the democratic process such as an independent judiciary, a free media and freedom of thought and speech at universities. If you aren't sure how to assess whether your preferred party or candidate are committed to safeguarding democracy above all else, the following 4 areas are a great litmus test. If your candidate or party has any of these characteristics, be very afraid: 1) Rejection of (or weak commitment to) the democratic rules of the game 2) Denial of the legitimacy of political opponents 3) Toleration or encouragement of violence 4) Readiness to curtail the civil liberties of opponents - including the media Go down this path and you very quickly end up with a Putin-type regime. #democracy #independentjudciary

As someone who has worked in, and observed, politics for my entire career, I know that decisions are made by governments and parliaments every day that affect people’s lives. Often the impacts are subtle, sometimes they are profound. As a registered lobbyist I know that decisions are almost always influenced by the voices of individuals and interest groups that can afford to navigate the corridors of power. Often the results of this influence are subtle, sometimes they are profound. For the most part, society is either ignorant or apathetic to this dynamic. I fail to see how establishing a highly transparent mechanism to allow first nations people to influence decisions that fundamentally affect them is in any way remarkable. Indeed, it carries far less risk of abuse than the status quo of political influencing. Society tolerates nameless, faceless people (like me) influencing government decisions every day of the week – The Voice is not the threat it is being made out to be. Again, drawing on my professional experience, I know that if the referendum goes down tomorrow it will take every shred of political will down with it. There will be no treaty. There will be no truth telling. And the status quo will roll on. And that, sadly, will suit the people who currently have the loudest voices in the corridors of power just fine.

🟥 Unionist politicians think they just killed independence stone dead ✊ Let’s prove them wrong. We don’t stop, we will never give up, we will campaign until we win and we will win. Independence is not about politics or General Elections but about the wellbeing of Scotland’s people and our nation’s future. It’s about decisions being made in Scotland, for Scotland, by the people of Scotland. The Unionist politicians think they have just been given a mandate to continue to extract our wealth and redirect our nation’s energy resources, to suppress our culture and subvert our nation’s potential for their own gain and their London-centric political games. They want us to feel scunnered, beaten up and exhausted. They are counting on us giving up. Join the grassroots independence campaign and prove them wrong. 20,000 others have already pledged their support, because only a non-party-political independence campaign can move independence support to the levels we need to win our independence. 👇 We Believe in Scotland – Join us! https://lnkd.in/erHcjAxv
