Sommeliers play such an important role in the wine industry.
I still remember when I worked as a sommelier at the Park Hyatt in Mendoza, I had a group of Brazilians who I sold about 14 bottles in one night. The group wanted to do a tasting of the wines that they “need to know” from Argentina and asked me if I could select for them.
My managers were amazed and asked how I could sell so many wines to a single table in a few hours? I guess if you didn’t have a sommelier there to help the group, the team would have struggled to select the wines and take this group on an Argentinean wine journey over dinner! The group absolutely loved it, they left a great review online, plus left a cigar and a bottle wine for me the next day. ❤️🍷
I had a very similar job recently in a retail environment. This was for a large organisation with many stores, and the stores that had a wine professional definitely had much higher wine sales.
I believe having someone PASSIONATE about wine, who is able to SPEND TIME with the consumers, LISTEN to them and provide them an ENGAGING environment is a great way to BOOST WINE SALES in restaurants, retail, etc.. Someone who can give the consumers a wine EXPERIENCE!
However, I wish that we can find a way to provide a better work environment and lifestyle for sommeliers who work on the floor. It is such a tough job, especially when you are a woman and have a family. How can we work long hours, late nights and every single weekend when we have children to look after? Also, because they need to save money, it’s common in restaurants that you end up being just one more waitress, and don’t have time to engage with your wine customers. For someone like me, who loves talking with people, and sharing wine stories, it didn’t match at all.
