Good evening, After attending over 20 Proweins, I find Richard's article being an interesting discusion to follow. Here's my take: In the competition between Wine Paris and Prowein, Wine Paris may soon take the lead due to its focus on the northern hemisphere producers and all what Richard already said. However, it's essential to remember that the Old World holds 50% market share, with the New World equally significant. Many buyers overlap between the two, necessitating their presence at Prowein. For European producers, Prowein offers a chance to meet additional buyers, reconnect with missed ones, or follow up on Wine Paris discussions. Given the current challenges, this secondary meeting opportunity is invaluable. Adjustments are necessary: - Ideally, there should be an eight-week gap between the two fairs to prevent choosing one over the other. - Wine Paris should improve presentation standards and organization to match German standards. - Prowein should downsize for efficiency and less overwhelm. - Paris should offer more options for northern hemisphere producers to attract buyers. - Collaborative efforts among producers, like shared booths, are beneficial. - Only producers with sufficient recognition and resources should attend Prowein. - Dusseldorf Messe should improve hospitality services. Adaptation to new trends is crucial. While Paris seems to be winning now, both Wine Paris and Prowein remain vital for the industry's future. Let's innovate to meet the real needs of producers and buyers, ensuring Europe remains a prominent wine trade destination. Cheers, Xavier

🍇🏆 Wine Lovers and Industry Insiders - Take note! 🌍🍷 Our latest data visualization takes you on a global tour of wine competitions, revealing where the most prestigious medals are awarded. Information about the awarded wines was taken from more than 250 of the largest Wine Competitions out of at least 600 held in the world every year. Priority was given to international competitions, while the results of national competitions were processed with lower priority. You can find the list of all wine competitions taken into the study here. Wine competitions exhibit considerable variation in the number of samples submitted and medals awarded. Following the guidelines set by the OIV - International Organisation of Vine and Wine, most competitions adhere to the recommendation that only 30% of submitted samples receive medals. Since 2020, over 431,090 medals have been awarded globally, with a significant concentration in Europe. Sommeliers play such an important role in the wine industry. I still remember when I worked as a sommelier at the Park Hyatt in Mendoza, I had a group of Brazilians who I sold about 14 bottles in one night. The group wanted to do a tasting of the wines that they “need to know” from Argentina and asked me if I could select for them. My managers were amazed and asked how I could sell so many wines to a single table in a few hours? I guess if you didn’t have a sommelier there to help the group, the team would have struggled to select the wines and take this group on an Argentinean wine journey over dinner! The group absolutely loved it, they left a great review online, plus left a cigar and a bottle wine for me the next day. ❤️🍷 I had a very similar job recently in a retail environment. This was for a large organisation with many stores, and the stores that had a wine professional definitely had much higher wine sales. I believe having someone PASSIONATE about wine, who is able to SPEND TIME with the consumers, LISTEN to them and provide them an ENGAGING environment is a great way to BOOST WINE SALES in restaurants, retail, etc.. Someone who can give the consumers a wine EXPERIENCE! However, I wish that we can find a way to provide a better work environment and lifestyle for sommeliers who work on the floor. It is such a tough job, especially when you are a woman and have a family. How can we work long hours, late nights and every single weekend when we have children to look after? Also, because they need to save money, it’s common in restaurants that you end up being just one more waitress, and don’t have time to engage with your wine customers. For someone like me, who loves talking with people, and sharing wine stories, it didn’t match at all. Please share your experience here with us, we love to discuss and learn from each other!
