💪 In 2023, SASSLA fought for a fair go for Preschool Directors and made a clear and compelling case that workload protections are wholly inadequate for the operational demands of today's Directors. 👇 We are proud that our advocacy for Preschool Directors resulted in: ✅ Allocation of $16 million per annum to allow for reduction in face-to-face teaching for Preschool Directors and other staffing options that will reduce workload pressures. ✅ In addition to general salary increases, a further 1.0% per annum for all Band A Leaders. ✅ Preschool Director permanency instead of fixed-term contracts. 😊 SASSLA will continue to actively represent the collective interests of Preschool Directors by identifying trends and risks that impact on your work and conditions of employment.

Check out my article on why more progressives like me ought to support community based and led charter schools as one of the tools to make public education work for all students and families. Any model of public education that works needs to be supported, charter, traditional district, magnet, community, renaissance, lab, intradistrict and interdistrict choice, etc. We are losing another generation of students arguing about and with adult special interests and our children don't have the luxury to wait decade after decade for proposed change that never happens or never addresses the root causes of systematic failure for the masses of students, especially Black, Brown and working class. #EdWoke https://lnkd.in/gTh2YzSG

Principals, Special Education Directors, and School Districts: Putting in the effort to train your teachers, assistants, paraprofessionals, and others who are involved in special education will save you time and money in the long run. Before law school I studied special education with an emphasis in severe disabilities. I worked as a paraprofessional in an elementary school during this time. Do you know how much training I received? None. I was never trained why I needed to keep a log of what the student was doing every 15 minutes. I was never trained why I needed to write a written summary of each day, I was never trained how to be a paraprofessional. Luckily, I knew why those things needed to be done and I did them. But, things could have ended very differently. #specialeducation #specialeducationlaw #education #schooldistricts

Sobering article about the #teacher shortage in special education. The article states that data from the U.S. Department of Education indicates that 42 states and #Washington, D.C. have fewer special education #teachers than schools need. That’s every state except #Arkansas, #California, #Louisiana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, #Oklahoma, #Oregon and #Utah. Enrollment in special education nationwide has increased by 800,000 in the last 10 years, increasing demand for special educators. Meanwhile, millions of teachers are expected to retire in the next decade. #NewHampshire #NorthDakota #SpecialEducation

Despite the importance of training teachers in inclusive in-service education and its role in improving their knowledge, skills and attitudes, pre-service training is of greater importance as university education programs are still traditional and deal with disability through the lens of disability and not by adopting a human rights approach. I believe that we need a transformative approach in university education programs to train teachers to teach people with disabilities within a diverse, fair, participatory, and supportive educational environment, not isolating environments. #Inclusive_education #Jordan #education_reform

In the United States, school counselors must provide direct and indirect services for disabled students, as mandated by law and delineated by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA). Unfortunately, school counselors are often not adequately trained to work with this marginalized population. For example, less than 40% of school counselor preparation programs require school counselor students to enroll in courses that discuss special education topics (Geddes Hall, 2014). As an act of solidarity, please react to and share this post to ensure school counselors advocate for students with disabilities. By spreading awareness, we can help improve training programs and support hiring well-equipped school counselors to provide disabled students with the resources they need to be successful. As a disabled person and a future school counselor, I know how much of a difference it can make for a student to see themselves represented, but anyone can make an impact if they are willing to learn and apply what they know. To learn more about the Disability Pride Flag used in this post, please read the following: https://lnkd.in/g8-iypGM References: Geddes Hall, J. (2015). Balancing Cradle-to-Career Education, Mixed-Income Housing Development, Community Health and Wellness, and Economic Vitality can be quite the juggling act. Add in the random tasks and events that unfold in our office every day, and it can feel like a lot to keep everything moving smoothly. But on those days when it seems overwhelming, we're reminded of the incredible outcomes that emerge when these moving parts align. Lately, we've witnessed a powerful example of this collaboration in action: the impact of safe, stable, affordable housing on learning outcomes at our neighborhood elementary school. As families move into Highlander, enrollment at Howard Kennedy School has surged. Since Highlander's development, Howard Kennedy has seen a remarkable decrease in chronic absenteeism, leading to stronger educational outcomes for neighborhood students.
