Heavyweights like The Coca-Cola Company, PepsiCo, Peet’s Coffee, Yum! Brands and Starbucks are joining forces to make this happen. 🌱 How It Works: Customers can now enjoy their favorite beverages in reusable cups. Multiple cup return points will be set up across the city, making it convenient for everyone. The goal? ♻️☕ STARBUCKS TO LEAD CITY-WIDE REUSABLE CUP PROJECT IN CALIFORNIA More than 30 eateries, including Starbucks, KFC, Dunkin', Burger King and Peet's Coffee, have collaborated on a first-of-its-kind reusable cup pilot in the city of Petaluma in California. The trial will be led by the Center for the Circular Economy at Closed Loop Partners, which convenes the NextGen Consortium, a project co-founded by Starbucks and McDonald's that is on a mission to overhaul single-use food packaging and drive reuse. It counts The Coca-Cola Company and PepsiCo as sector lead partners. How does the reusable cup project work? Starting on August 5, when customers order a takeaway latte at one of eight participating Starbucks stores in Petaluma, or a Coke at Burger King, for the duration of the trial, they’ll be served the drink in the purple cups branded ‘Sip, Return, Repeat’ for free. Once they’re done with the beverage, they can return it to one of more than 60 collection points spread across participating businesses and public spaces in Petaluma. They don’t need to wash these, or even remove the straw or lid – that’ll be taken care of at the next step. If they take the cup home, they can also schedule a pickup. The initiative is designed to make reuse as easy as throwing a single-use cup for customers. After the cups are returned, they’re collected, professionally washed and sanitised, and returned to stores for further use by reusable packaging solutions company Muuse. Any cups found to be unfit for reuse will be recycled locally. Over the next three months, the initiative will collect baseline data to measure customer participation and the climate impact of offering reusables as the default choice, with an eye on whether the model can viably be scaled. This is tricky. The combination of disposable cups and fast food, both of which came of age at about the same time, is a tough one to shake. (…and now I want a milkshake…) It can work beautifully in closed loop systems: cafeterias, concert venues, etc. But as soon as those cups are carried out the door, it all goes south. Who wants to haul around a dirty cup? One startup in the Midwest is pitching a scheme that links fast food containers to customers and will send out email reminders for returns. From their website: “Customers check out reusables from participating operators for free and receive text message reminders to return them. Souvenir fees are applied for reusables not returned after two weeks.” Holy moly. I would so pay NOT to do this. Think about it: the clamshell for your salad, the cup for your drink, linked to you and your credit card. What could go wrong? And if the company goes public, woudn’t it be the fiduciary thing to sell the data to marketers? Everything we do is now a data point. When a big company with deep pockets such as AT&T cannot protect my data from going out on the dark web, how I am supposed to feel good about the data security of a random reusable cup service? I actually wrote to the startup via their website with my concerns. They are a young company that wants to make the world better. Which is why I am not naming them. But it has been a couple of weeks and I am still waiting for a reponse… PR3 has the right idea about standards and convenience. Perhaps Reuse bins next to Recycle bins next to Trashbins? By scanning conveniently placed QR codes on any product, consumers gain access to CIRT’s website, “CIRT.Check,” which tells them what to do with the empty beer cans, depending on their location. And their clever tagline above the QR code, ”PLEASE RECYCLE–IT’D BE A LOT COOLER IF YOU DID,” has prompted consumers to engage in a playful and lighthearted manner. This collaboration signifies a positive step towards a more sustainable future—no more confusion about what goes where or if the beer bottle belongs in the blue bin. With CIRT’s ingenious technology and database, Four Peaks has the capacity to: • Provide location-specific recycling information to more than 21 million people • Divert 3.5 million pounds of packaging from landfills, and • Offset more than 5.2 million pounds of CO2 equivalent emissions. While they say that K-cups are not going away, Keurig is testing K-rounds which will hopefully become an more environmentally friendly alternative. After settling a 2018 lawsuit over how recyclable the cups really were, the company has worked to find an alternative. If you are unable to recycle the k-cups in your community, a mailback is being launched in late 2024, so be on the lookout to improve your recycling habits. More information is in the link below.
