The year 2025 marks a pivotal moment in our relationship with Artificial Intelligence (AI). The initial hype of 2023, characterized by flashy chatbots and exaggerated promises, has given way to a more nuanced understanding of AI's true potential. Now, in the third year of this AI revolution, leaders must shift from mere observation to proactive, corrective action.
Peter Drucker, the renowned management guru, famously stated, "Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things." This timeless wisdom remains highly relevant in this evolving landscape. While AI provides powerful tools for data analysis and decision-making, the human element remains irreplaceable. Effective leadership in the AI era requires not just the ability to understand and leverage technology, but also the ability to clearly articulate a vision, inspire others, and build strong, human-centered relationships.
The Rise of AI 5.0: A New Era of Leadership
AI 5.0 signifies a paradigm shift. It's not just about automating tasks; it's about amplifying human potential. This era demands a focus on:
"Primus Inter Pares": A New Paradigm for Leadership
The concept of "Primus Inter Pares" – first among equals – offers a powerful framework for AI 5.0 leadership. It moves away from traditional hierarchical models and emphasizes:
Key Skills for AI 5.0 Leaders:
In the AI 5.0 era, leaders must cultivate a unique set of skills:
The Role of AI in Leadership Development
AI itself can be a powerful tool for enhancing leadership development. AI-powered tools can:
In short, the age of AI 5.0 demands a new kind of leader – one who is a "Primus Inter Pares," a first among equals, who empowers their teams, fosters innovation, and navigates the complexities of the AI-powered world with ethical and human-centric leadership. By embracing these principles and leveraging the power of AI, leaders can guide their organizations towards a successful and sustainable future.
5.0 LEADERSHIP GIFT: A LEADER IS A PRIMUS INTER PARES
There still is a great abuse with the term leader. All the inputs around Leadership during the last 40 years, lacked substance thus creating hype that had no practical value. Primus inter pares is a Latin phrase meaning first among equals. It is typically used as an honorary title for someone who is formally equal to other members of their group but is accorded unofficial respect, traditionally owing to their seniority in office.
This lack of practical value was because it was widely missed that leadership is not an endowed consequence of positionship, just as singing ability is not an endowed consequence of having a voice. The skills that people see in a leader are not always quantifiable or immediately recognizable but they know when they see it and they know when it is missing.
But – nowadays - being just a manager, is far from enough!
Many companies have been treating humans during the last 40 years as “resources”. They will have to go again through the experience of treating humans as creators and innovators, because true leading means creating
➢ FUTURE,
➢ CONFIDENCE AND
➢ BELIEF IN IT.
The 'Primus Inter Pares' approach to leadership – first among equals – offers us a new way of managing and leading in the 21st century. In the AI 5.0 Leadership era it means a tutor who is trained on
· Google Gemini 2.0 as the Digital In House MBA in Management, Leadership and Strategy
· Google AI Studio as the Agentic Partner to consult on all steps
· Microsoft Copilot as the AI specialist on Imagery and Technical Knowledge
While being aware of the company’s most important objective: its mission for its customers, as well as the vision where the company has to be in the future the 5.0 leader, is able to achieve a shared vision with his/her stakeholders and meets the following minimum requirements:
1)The 5.0 Leader knows that a real leader is neither charismatic nor born. A leader is not born, because he/she is made; and when he/she ceases to make himself a leader, he/she has ceased to be one. The "born leader" is precisely what we do not need anymore; because he/she is a visceral and egomaniac one.
We have tendencies to:
1. Micro-Management: In an attempt to display control or exert influence, titled leaders often direct details that are better handled by those closest to the environment.
2. Challenge: Titled leaders frequently challenge or second-guess the decisions of their team. This is particularly common when we are in the presence of the titled leader’s peer group and they feel threatened or lack confidence. The old, hierarchical structure supported the thinking that those in higher managerial positions were superior, more knowledgeable, of higher intelligence, and therefore, more valuable to the organisation. Those in lower positions were deemed to be inferior, mere cogs in a wheel, and of less worth. While this approach holds a management structure in place, it does nothing to enhance employee satisfaction, enjoyment in the role or longevity in the workplace.
3. Internal Politics: Whether for personal benefit or believing to have the best interests of the team at heart, titled leaders may make trade-offs with their peers. We sometimes think the team members closest to the solution don’t understand how things “really work”. In the past, there has been a definitive desire among managers to feel as though they have to control their employees to keep them working productively. This belief holds people in tight boxes, limits their creativity and asks of them little more than the job requires. With this form of control, also comes a threat: perform, or suffer the consequences. This view gives managers fuel that supports the atmosphere of power at the top.
When we practice these tactics, we fail to support the right person as first among equals. As a result, we fail to optimize our own team, results and leadership. In short, we are not serving the organization first. So the next time you are tempted to micro-manage, challenge or politic, stop. Identify who is Primus-Inter-Pares and empower them? Who is First Among Equals in the situation and therefore, best suited to lead, for the moment? Serve your organization by supporting the first among equals
2) The 5.0 Leader as leader, demands more of him/herself, than others expect of him/her: he/she must be an example!. All his/her self-training, on top of a very satisfactory completion of his/her duties, evidences his/her exemplary role
3) The 5.0 Leader has the moral strength - as a leader - to be tough and demanding with his/her team mates, because he/she believes more in them, than they do in themselves. Affection and love are demanding. Always! - If not, they’re gone!
4) A leader has a heart and love for each person of his/her team and needs to know the expectations each one has of the leader. If the leader cannot deliver, he/she says it clearly and transparently. As a leader, he/she offers friendship, not privileges. How The 5.0 Leader interacts with his/her colleagues, his/her associates (Europe/USA) and his/her 2.0 Community (European Leadership/American Leadership) are indeed first-hand examples of this 4th leadership skill.
5) A leader does not tolerate the reign of fear in his/her team. He/She promotes courage and initiative of all individuals to take risks, make mistakes, in order to leave the limits of his/her comfort zone everyday. He/She makes them grow, overcoming fear into challenge. The 5.0 Leader is capable of performing all these actions worldwide to the extent the team´s performance is always enhancing.
6) The 5.0 Leader understands a leader is ahead, not “above”. He/She expects his/her peers to disagree openly. his/her communication style is wide open with both colleagues and superiors thereby earning the respect of both. Primus Inter Pares offers a new way of leading in the 21st century. With this approach, employees are seen as equals, regardless of their actual position or status. There is, of course, someone who has the role of ultimate decision maker, but with this mindset, the opinions and specific talents of each individual are valued and recognised. Moreover, the leader knows his part is to support the ultimate success of each member of the team
7) The 5.0 Leader sticks to the principle that the leader is a "primus inter pares" humbly working without whims and teaming up with colleagues. Shares sadness and joys, feasts and games with both his/her team and his/her associates. There is no fixed formula for the ideal CEO. WE think however that one needs to be a ‘First Among Equals’. One rule of management is to always hire people who are better than you are at what they do. That also means you can’t be a leader who thinks he is better than everybody else. If that would be the case you would’ve hired the wrong people.
8) A leader hires people who are better than he/she is, and gives them opportunities to prove it. The 5.0 Leader does not micromanage but always relies on his/her team of experts both locally and internationally. The 'Primus Inter Pares' approach to leadership – first among equals – offers us a new way of managing and leading in the 21st century. With this approach all employees are seen as equals, regardless of their position or status. There is, of course, someone who has the role of ultimate decision maker, but with this approach, the opinions and individual talents are all valued and recognized. A leader working on the principles of equality would allow employees to have flexibility within their role and the business structure. There would be recognition that with more freedom to shape their role, employees would naturally come into alignment with their innate talents and gifts leading to optimum performance. This also leads to people feeling recognised, as well as generating motivation within the workplace
9) A leader does not try to motivate others, because he/she knows that it is neither possible nor desirable. The 5.0 Leader sticks to Great Executives’ principle of leading by example i.e. he/she knows his/ her colleagues will follow suit when he/she acts with a clear direction. Primus inter pares, Latin for “first among equals” is a great way for leaders to frame their thinking around specific projects, tasks and decisions. The concept is simple: focus less on traditional hierarchy or formal titles and more on who is best suited to lead, given the immediate need. Managers who embrace ‘first among equals’ do not see themselves as superior. They recognise that while they have an final decision-making role to perform, this does not inherently make them a superior person. These managers drop the ego tendency of seeing themselves as “better than” and lead from a place of awareness that we all have different functions to perform, diverse opinions to add, and, within us, a potential to fulfill. With this willingness to see people as co-workers, it becomes easy to hire those who are more talented, more experienced and more knowledgeable. This, in turn, provides enormous dividends for the business and enables the manager to engage the very best
10) Last but not least, and perhaps more importantly, a leader creates the proper context for each person of his/her team, through which each one can motivate himself with challenges worthy of his/her pride. The 5.0 Leader applies by the book the principle that Leadership is forward- oriented towards a better future to progress and progress is the realization of the impossible as “I am possible”. Making dreams come true is both a poetic and accurate definition of progress. To lead in this way requires that leaders have a strong sense of their inherent worth and the value they add to the business and the individuals that are part of it. With this in place, they are not threatened by the expertise, position or authority of others. This attitude is a magnet for high-level employees who see such a workplace as an opportunity for their empowerment and a place to make a difference. This leads to a deep commitment to the business and its vision. In our current age of information overload and 24-hour technology, with the millennial generation filling many of the roles within an organisation, this enlightened attitude to leadership is the way forward for ultimate business success.
