Russia's April oil and gas revenue to double
Russia's oil and gas revenue in April will almost double year on year to $14 billion thanks to rising prices, Reuters calculations show, emphasising the difficulties Western nations face as they seek to limit Kremlin income and stifle its military might.
The war in Ukraine has prompted the West to impose multiple sanctions aimed at curbing Russian oil and gas income that accounts for about a third of the country's federal budget.
Measures have also included restrictions on Russian oil purchases, financial operations and vessels, as well as a $60 a barrel price cap.
The projected April jump in Russia's oil revenue is bigger in percentage terms than the 30% increase expected for the whole of 2024.
Reuters calculations show Russia's projected April oil and gas revenue at 1.292 trillion roubles ($14 billion), up from 648 billion roubles in April 2023 and slightly down from the 1.308 trillion roubles last month.

GALP discovers enough oil and gas for another 143 years
Two wells off coast of Namibia estimated to hold at least 10 billion barrels
Portuguese energy giant Galp has seen its shares hit “an all-time high” following the discovery that two ‘wells’ off the coast of Namibia hold enough oil and gas for the next 143 years.
From one day to the next, the Amorim family who own the largest number of shares in the company made almost a billion euros.
Just in the concession bloc known as Mopane – and before sinking any more additional exploration wells – the company estimates it is sitting on another 10 billions barrels of crude, say reports.
Portugal as a nation consumes 191,000 barrels a day but it is being widely stressed by all media sources that the discovery “will have no effect on fuel prices in Portugal”.
GALP’s shares rose 20.64% (€19.35) with the discovery, meaning the company is now worth €14.959 billion – €2.558 billion more than it was last Friday.

World’s biggest floating offshore wind farm gets go-ahead
The world’s biggest offshore floating wind farm is set to be built off the coast of Scotland after the project was given the green light.
When operational, Green Volt will boast up to 35 floating turbines and provide 560 megawatts of energy off the coast of Peterhead, Aberdeenshire.
Generation will go to offshore oil and gas platforms, but the farm will also be connected to the UK grid.
The current biggest development, off the coast of Norway, has just 11 turbines and generates around 88 megawatts of energy.
The development – part of the Innovation and Target Oil and Gas leasing round from Crown Estate Scotland – was hailed as “great news” by First Minister Humza Yousaf.
“Scotland is one of the best places in the world to develop offshore wind and its supply chain, and we are determined to maximise the huge economic opportunity offshore wind can bring,” he said.

India Emerges as a Major Exporter of Solar Panels
Rystad Energy ’s latest data reveals renewable energy installations in India surged to a record 7.1 gigawatts (GW) in March, more than doubling the previous record of 3.5 GW set in March 2022.
The increase in installations helped India reach its highest-ever annual installed capacity of 18.5 GW for the fiscal year ending on 31 March 2024.
The growth was primarily driven by solar installations, up 23% on levels from the 2023 financial year, driven by the commissioning of numerous projects within India's inter-state transmission system network and ultra-mega solar park schemes.
In particular, states such as Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra have contributed to this expansion. Notably, Adani Green Energy Ltd. , the renewable energy arm of Indian conglomerate Adani Group , made significant strides in the first quarter of 2024 by installing approximately 1.6 GW of solar capacity in the Kutch district of Gujarat.
This initiative is part of a wider hybrid renewable energy park that will see up to 30 GW of combined solar and wind capacity installed in Khavda in the coming years.

Nuclear fusion breakthrough overcomes key barrier to limitless clean energy
Two of the key barriers to producing power from nuclear fusion have been overcome, in what scientists say is a major advance towards producing near-limitless clean energy.
A team at US energy firm General Atomics achieved a “sweet spot” for operating the next-generation power source within a donut-shaped tokamak reactor.
Nuclear fusion replicates the same natural processes found within the Sun in order to produce vast amounts of energy, however harnessing the superhot plasma within the reactor in order for it to work in a meaningful way has proved elusive.
Two of the biggest obstacles have been getting the plasma to a high enough density level, and then containing the plasma within the reactor for long enough for it to be useful.
“Fusion energy is the ultimate energy source for humanity,” the researchers wrote in a paper detailing the breakthrough.

Global battery rollout doubled last year – but needs to be six times faster, says IEA
The rollout of batteries across the global electricity industry more than doubled last year but will need to be six times faster if the world hopes to meet its renewable energy targets, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA) .
A report from the global energy watchdog found that new batteries totalling 42 gigawatts (GW) were plugged into electricity systems around the world last year, increasing total capacity by more than 130% from the year before to 85GW.
However, the IEA warned that an estimated 1,500GW of energy storage would be required worldwide by the end of the decade, including 1,200 GW from batteries, to avoid stalling the global clean energy transition and help meet the UN’s net zero targets.
Batteries have emerged as one of the world’s fastest-growing clean energy technologies after a 90% decline in costs over the past 15 years driven by the rapid growth of electric vehicles.
But costs will need to fall further, according to the IEA, and governments must do more to diversify the supply chains behind battery manufacturing to avoid bottlenecks in the market.
