OIL AND GAS NEWS
Future of new oil and gas projects in UK thrown into doubt after landmark Supreme Court decision
The court concluded the environmental impact of emissions from burning fossil fuels must be considered in planning applications for new extraction projects - not just the impacts of the emissions produced in extracting them.
The case hinged around an oil drilling project at Horse Hill in Surrey, granted planning permission by Surrey County Council in 2019.
Local campaigner Sarah Finch argued the environmental impact of the project should have taken into account not just the carbon emissions created in extracting the oil, but the environmental impact when they are burned.
She challenged an earlier Court of Appeal ruling dismissing her case, having also lost a legal battle in the High Court.
But the Supreme Court justices ruled on Thursday three to two in favour of allowing her appeal, and quashed the decision to grant planning permission for the site.
The decision, from the UK's highest court, could have immediate implications for other fossil fuel extraction projects facing legal challenge by environmental campaigners.

Carlyle creates new Med oil and gas company with $945 million Energean deal
The Carlyle Group will form a new Mediterranean-focused oil and gas company led by former bp CEO Tony Hayward after the private equity fund agreed to acquire Energean's assets in Egypt, Italy and Croatia for up to $945 million, the companies said on Thursday.
The deal will allow Carlyle to tap into the eastern Mediterranean gas market that has grown rapidly in recent years as gas demand in Egypt soars and Europe seeks alternatives to Russian gas.
Carlyle International Energy Partners (CIEP), the fund's non-U.S. energy investment arm, said the new company will initially produce up to 47,000 barrels of oil per day in the three countries.
But it will seek to grow output by upgrading existing assets and through other acquisitions in the Mediterranean, CIEP co-head Bob Mcguire told Reuters.
"There is plenty of running room for these assets in terms of geology," Mcguire said, adding that growing demand for natural gas in Egypt and Italy will underpin future investments.

RENEWABLE ENERGY NEWS
Electricity Prices In France Just Turned Negative Because Of Renewables
Energy prices in France turned negative following a surge in renewable output last week, causing a number of nuclear reactors to shut down in response.
As Bloomberg reports, consumption dropped considerably, with blasting sunshine and strong winds causing solar and wind generation to flood the grid with green energy.
While that may sound like an overwhelmingly good thing, much of this power ends up not being used, because battery storage capabilities have lagged behind renewable generation facilities. And not just in France — much of the continent has struggled to hold on to the wealth of renewable energy it's producing.
Worse yet, as some experts have pointed out, negative energy prices could turn away investors, which could further slow the development of energy storage systems.
In short, while it's a windfall for the environment — an energy watchdog predicted last week that global oil demand will peak in 2029 — negative prices are also a symptom of storage solutions struggling to even out power availability over time.

Amazon plans England's tallest onshore wind turbine
Amazon is in the early stages of planning to build England's tallest onshore wind turbine at one of its warehouses.
The company has asked Swindon Borough Council whether it needs to provide an environmental assessment for a planned turbine at its facility in Swindon, Wiltshire.
In a screening opinion request, Amazon said it wanted to produce its own energy to meet its net zero targets by 2040, using a turbine which would be 500ft (152m) tall.
England's tallest onshore wind turbine is currently in Bristol, it is 492ft and double the height of the average English turbine.
Amazon told planners it was unable to put solar panels on the roof at its Swindon site, despite having wanted to and been granted planning permission.
”Amazon is now seeking other renewable energy generation methods such as the installation of a single wind turbine.
"Wind energy is an abundant natural resource. It is non-polluting, clean, and sustainable," the company said.

NUCLEAR & POWER NEWS
[EU] Member states beef up safety rules amid growing nuclear power market
EU countries agreed on new nuclear safeguards which will see a greater level of inspections on facilities and the use of nuclear materials, despite a call from environmentalists to stop financing atomic power.
EU countries have approved changes to rules on the use and transit of nuclear materials with a view to increasing safety as reliance on nuclear energy is set to grow within the coming decades, three EU diplomats told Euronews.
The approved changes were made by ambassadors meeting behind closed doors to review Euratom treaty provisions. The provisions by member states will now be sent to the Commission for final sign off.
Discussions revolved mainly around the level of inspections of nuclear installations, the European Commission’s role as a watchdog and on ensuring nuclear materials will be used solely for power generation across the bloc, since nuclear became legally recognised in the EU as a low-carbon energy fit for the energy transition.

EV & BATTERY NEWS
US Energy Storage Market Soars 84% In Q1
Japanese brand's tech took 17 years to develop; battery units are half the size but can provide twice the energy
The U.S. energy storage market set a first-quarter record for capacity installed in Q1 2024, with 1,265 megawatts (MW) deployed across all segments. This marks the highest storage capacity ever installed in a first quarter in the U.S., representing an 84% increase from Q1 2023.
According to Wood Mackenzie and the American Clean Power Association’s (ACP) newly released US Energy Storage Monitor report, the grid-scale segment installed 993 MW, producing the highest Q1 on record for the grid-scale segment. Nevada, California, and Texas accounted for 90% of new grid-scale capacity added.
“The rapid growth of the energy storage industry comes at a critical time, providing a solution to growing energy demand and increasingly variable weather conditions that are placing added stress on the grid,” said John Hensley, Vice President of Markets and Policy Analysis at ACP. “A strong start to 2024 sets expectations high for the remainder of the year. We look forward to celebrating the industry’s first double digit installation year and cheering the tight race for top storage state playing out between California and Texas.”
The residential segment set a record for quarterly installations at 250 MW in Q1, an 8% increase over the previous record set in Q4 2023. California drove growth in the residential segment, installing 24% more than the previous quarter.
