🌍 At the sidelines of #WHS2024, Amref Health Africa, in collaboration with the World Health Summit Secretariat, hosted an insightful dinner discussion focused on financing resilient health systems, with a particular lens on #Africa. The event brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including civil society, policymakers, governments, development banks, businesses, philanthropies, and multilateral organisations. Under the dynamic moderation of Dr. Githinji Gitahi, the discussion revealed clear takeaways and solutions to address the urgent health financing gaps. Key Takeaways: ✔ Health systems need more than just funding— they need strategic investment: We must not only mobilise more resources for health but also ensure we get more health for every dollar spent. ✔ 🩺 Health is an investment, not a cost: Strong health systems are the foundation of thriving communities and economies. Health should be viewed as an essential investment in people. ✔ ⚖️ Health inequalities remain stark: In Europe, countries invest on average $5,000 per capita on health, while in sub-Saharan Africa, the figure is just $40. This disparity reflects the critical need for more equitable financing mechanisms. ✔ 🌍 Global responsibility for health: Health threats know no borders. The responsibility to build resilient health systems must be shared across the global community. ✔ ⚠️ Weak health systems are increasingly strained: From the rise in mental illnesses to the growing health impacts of #climatechange, fragile systems are being pushed to their limits. Addressing these new challenges requires urgent attention. ✔ 🤝 Health is a political choice: Political will is essential for progress. Budgets must be flexible and adaptable, allowing countries sovereignty over the allocation of resources, while avoiding “pillarised” funding that leaves gaps in care. ✔ 🔄 Systemic change is essential: Simply injecting more money into broken systems won’t solve the problem. We must transform health systems, with cross-sectoral collaboration between institutions and actors. We know what works—it’s time to act. A key highlight of the event was the celebratory toast marking the official launch of Amref Health Africa Deutschland. Congratulations to the #AmrefInGermany team! 🎉 🙏🏽 A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed to making this event a success! We look forward to welcoming you next year in Kigali at Africa’s largest public health convening, the Africa Health Agenda International Conference (AHAIC).
