The Environment Agency, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Cornwall Council and the Department for Business and Trade have been visiting some of Cornwall’s mining sites to discover how the industry is set to develop and become a major part of both Cornwall and the country’s economy. The group met with Cornish Lithium Plc at the Trevalour Hard Rock project, Cornish Metals Inc. at South Crofty tin mine and Imerys British Lithium Limited at their Gunheath Discovery Centre ⛏️ The purpose of the visit was to consider how we are best placed to support the government's sustainable growth agenda while ensuring the environment is protected under the right legislation. These visits also provided an opportunity to discuss how we are proactively preparing for permit applications related to the UK's critical minerals strategy - demonstrating that growth and environmental responsibility go hand in hand 🤝 #EnvironmentalRegulation #Growth #SustainableMining #CriticalMinerals

Proud to see the £4m investment in the Leeds laboratory enhancing our regulatory capabilities. This upgrade significantly boosts our ability to monitor and detect substances in England's waters. From identifying emerging pollutants to analysing over 1,000 chemicals in a single test, this state-of-the-art facility strengthens our evidence-based regulation. As Dr Robert Bradburne highlighted in his speech, our monitoring needs are constantly evolving. In 2024, we analysed 99,000 samples across 13,000 monitoring sites, producing 1.7 million measurements - vital data that underpins our regulatory decisions and helps protect our environment. This investment, through the Natural Capital and Ecosystem Assessment (NCEA) programme, ensures we stay ahead of environmental challenges and maintain our position as a robust, evidence-led regulator. 📖 Read more about our enhanced capabilities: https://lnkd.in/ebahyvNQ 📊 Catch up on Chief Scientist Robert Bradburne’s speech: https://lnkd.in/ePS_WG2s #EnvironmentalRegulation #WaterQuality #Science #Evidence

🚧 #Regulation in Action: A Day on the Ground with Our Chief Regulator 🌍 Yesterday, our Chief Regulator, jo nettleton, visited Darent Industrial Estate, Abbey Wood, and the Thames Barrier to see first-hand how regulation, urban regeneration, and environmental sustainability intersect. 🔎 Highlights from the visit: 🌊 Thames Barrier Estate – A discussion centred around the challenges and opportunities urban regeneration brings to regulation, including planning & permitting, future security, and balancing growth ambitions with regulatory enforcement and resource pressures. 🌿 Southmere Lake – A standout example of how environmental enhancements can be secured through redevelopment. 🏭 Darent Industrial Estate – Tackling non-compliance and illegal waste operations remain a priority. The group explored how flood risk management regulations align with enforcement tools and how collaboration with key partners strengthens our approach. This was a valuable visit showcasing the complexities of regulation in a rapidly changing urban environment. A huge thank you to our teams for their insights and for showcasing the critical work happening on the ground. #Sustainability #NetZero #FuturePlanning #UrbanRegeneration Environment Agency
