I believe the human mind is an amazingly resilient and resourceful machine. In the face of chaos, trauma, abuse, and other negative situations, it creates coping skills. Unfortunately, these coping skills - escapism, withdrawal, numbness, hyper-vigilance, trauma repetition, among others - often become maladaptive over time in the forms of anxiety, depression, addiction, etc. I see people not as "broken", but with coping skills that just are not helpful anymore.
