Many in- and out-of-state college students call.
As a marriage and family therapist, I have successfully helped many individuals (single adults, college students, and adolescents), couples, and families through the difficulties faced with normal family problems, as well as diagnostically challenging issues. I have worked with people who come from all over Utah Valley. I have extensive experience working with adolescents and families. I love working with youth and young adults as they move through the complexities of life at that time. I look forward to working with you. My office is located at the mouth of Provo Canyon.

I love working with teenagers and adults who want help navigating a variety of issues. Many of my clients struggle with anxiety, depression, feelings of low self-worth or confidence. They want skills and tools to help improve how they feel and what they do. I consider it a great privilege to help them learn and develop these skills. I also work with individuals and couples who experience sexual/intimacy challenges and concerns. Whether working with someone to gain more control over Out of Control Sexual Behavior or assisting individuals and couples through problems in their sex lives, I can help.

I specialize in therapy for athletes, with a dual focus on improving both mental health and sports perfor mance. I also specialize in therapy for individuals navigating ADHD, anxiety, or depression. I believe that mental health is an experience, not an illness or disorder. I help clients focus on connecting with their experience, moving them towards a better understanding of self and away from the pursuit of trying to fix themselves. Those I work with often report this perspective and approach enables them to move forward in their lives, despite the challenges and difficulties they face.

I am an expert at helping adults who have autism, anxiety, depression, OCD, and/or couples issues. I help individuals regain control of their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors to improve their ability to function and gain satisfaction from the many environments (home, school, work, community) in which they interact with. I have worked hard to be competent in many modalities of therapy to fit my clients needs. My clients would say I am easy to get along with and have a good sense of humor. I am the owner of Utah Valley Psychology and have worked hard to make UVP a safe, healing, and supportive environment for all.

Wow! There’s are a lot of therapists on this site! Honestly, they are all probably pretty good, right? I bet few have over 25 years of experience helping people not only survive, but thrive, like I do. You should give me a call if you are serious about healing or change.

Hi, my name is Spencer, thanks for stopping by and taking a look at my profile. Finding the right therapist can be tricky at times. Here's a bit about myself to help you see if we'd be a good fit. My main goal as a therapist is to help others live in congruence with themselves. I believe peace comes and shame is reduced when one is aligned with their personal values. A lot of different events can push us out of alignment, and therapy is great at getting us back on track. Areas I spend a lot of time in are: self esteem, substance abuse, relationships, men's/wo men's issues, life transitions, anxiety/depression.

Life, like the ocean, can be beautiful one moment, and brutal and unforgiving the next. Whether we are besieged by feelings we don’t understand, held captive by doubts we just can’t seem to overcome, or enduring a life transition that throws us for a loop, there are few things as destabilizing. It is natural in those circumstances to experience stress, depression, despair, anxiety, and anger. We may wonder if those feelings are our new normal. My response to that question is no. We can find peace and meaning.

Hello, I’m a therapist dedicated to working with men and boys aged 13 and up. In today’s society, males face unique mental health challenges, such as navigating toxic masculinity, addressing pornography use, and building close, meaningful relationships. Additionally, there are many barriers that make it difficult for men to seek and engage in therapeutic work. In my practice, I strive to meet men where they are, making therapy both rigorous and enjoyable. My goal is to support you in the hard work of healing and self-improvement.

My 10 years as a therapist have exposed me to a variety of challenges from deescalating unsafe situations to mediating complex relationship barriers. In my experience trauma can often be found at the core of depression, anxiety, family/spouse conflict, disordered eating, sexual confusion and addiction. All of these challenges can create a sense of feeling stuck, unfulfilled and alone. In some cases, these struggles can be intimidating to address without help. My belief is that therapy acts as a safe place for you to address those struggles in an empowering way; one that gives a sense of purpose, and leaves you feeling connected.

I work well with people who are motivated to challenge their inner dialogue in an effort to grow and change their present reality. Depression, Anxiety, and Grief limit our perspectives. Achieving balance internally with thoughts and emotions can lead to a healthier sense of self, more fulfilling relationships, and a broader vision of what a positive future can hold. Attachment struggles hinder our ability to connect with others in a way that doesn't sacrifice our own identity. Boundaries, knowledge of emotional needs, and effective communication are the goals to adaptive attachment. We can address any of these areas in sessions.

Welcome! Please take your time to choose a therapist that you feel would be a good fit—doing so is vital to the overall process of therapy. My style? I want clients ready to learn, grow, and finally feel in control of their lives again. I am very passionate about my work and will give you resources in between sessions so that you aren't limited to progressing just once a week for 45 minutes or an hour. In this way, I try my best to be the "guide on the side"—rather than the "sage on the stage"—for my clients.

I use a variety of therapy models including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Experiential Therapy, EMDR, ART, Parts Work, Gott man Relationship Model for marriage counseling, Emotion Focused Therapy, and Person-Centered approaches among others.
Working to improve mental health, creating positive changes, and increasing feelings of peace and happiness in one’s life and relationships can be one of the most difficult things anyone undertakes. I believe that therapy is a collaborative journey from where we are to where we want to be. After having walked with so many people navigating this road of personal growth for over 20 yrs I have become comfortable having those uncomfortable conversations it requires. Deseret Counseling understands the path as well, having been voted best counseling in Utah County the last 10 yrs and counting.

Whether it be mental health issues, trauma, addiction or anything else that causes us to feel lack of control in our lives, it is incredibly isolating. Unfortunately, isolation causes all of those issues to just get worse and worse; and we seem to lose ourselves along the way. It is demoralizing to look at our lives and feel like our true selves are just out of reach. When this occurs, we can’t help but look in the mirror and just feel broken or, at the very least, desperate for change. While working with me you will experience the healing power of connection, and an opportunity to fully examine yourself without judgment.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
