There’s a new song on the streets of Mzansi, featuring iconic SA originals Khuli Chana, Blxckie and 25K. The catchy tune is tagged to the new KFC Streetwise campaign – Original Feeds Original. It’s not every day that a brand like KFC gets to celebrate 25 years of a legacy brand, and this campaign puts KFC Streetwise in the spotlight as a sub-brand that has been a firm favourite of South Africa’s youth for a quarter of a century. Launching today, the campaign includes: • The Originals Anthem – A brand-new track by Khuli Chana, Blxckie, and 25K, available on Spotify and YouTube. • An epic TV commercial from director Sam Coleman, featuring our Original Tastemakers - our icons of originality including Kind Kid toymaker Sanele Qwabe, “Nail Pimp” Nailed Ntswembu, the Island Gals skateboarders, designer Ruberto Scholtz, visual director Rowan Sakarombe, the Botswana Metalheads, and custom car artist Ofentse Mphatsoe • A packaging collaboration between KFC Streetwise and Cultural creator Sindiso Nyoni, an illustrator who has built a stellar career after being inspired by an “original” – his high school art teacher, a retired graphic designer. The campaign is a bold and joyful reflection of the fact that behind every game-changing artist or brand, there’s an original who inspired them. Originals is not just a song – it’s a movement to ignite young South Africans to let their creativity shine. For 25 years, KFC Streetwise has been fuelling the dreamers, the people brave enough to stand out. And now, we’re turning up the volume to inspire the next wave of originals. Because when Original Feeds Original, the cycle of inspiration never stops. Let your original shine. #OriginalFeedsOriginal - Chief Marketing Officer: Grant Macpherson - Marketing Director: Samantha Redman - Head of Marketing SADC: Lynette Ngwata - Social Media: Vongai Mumbula - Public Relations: Andra Nel - Creative Agency: Ogilvy South Africa - Media Agency: Mindshare South Africa, Hearts & Science - PR Agency: KAMuses Consultancy - Influencer Agency: Punkystarfish Digital Agency - Activation: Offlimit Communication - Production: Patriot Films, Say Thank You (Sibot- Music), Sterling Sound, The Refinery, Priest

Just a day after Zimbabwe’s Kirsty Coventry was elected as the first woman and the first African to lead the International Olympic Committee, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah was inaugurated asNamibia’s first female president. The two appointments came within two weeks of International Women’s Day (IWD) on 8 March, and Nandi-Ndaitwah’s swearing-in coincided with the 35th anniversary of Namibia’s independence. ‘To mark IWD, KFC compiled an inspiring list of women accelerating action for gender equality in Africa, so I was delighted to note that one of the new president’s first acts was to announce a cabinet with a female majority,’ says Akhona Qengqe, General Manager of KFC Africa. ‘Placing women in positions of leadership sends an important signal about societal change and provides role models for other women who hope to emulate them.’ Nandi-Ndaitwah is one of only two female sitting presidents in Africa; the other is Samia SuluhuHassan, president of Tanzania since 2021 and one of the women on KFC’s inaugural list of ‘African female firsts’ in 2024. Namibia’s new president joined the liberation struggle as a 14-year-old. ‘Fifty-eight years later she’s still fighting for what she believes in, and that sets a remarkable example of fortitude,’ says Qengqe. KFC Africa extends our heartfelt congratulations on this incredible achievement of Female Firsts driving gender transformation on the continent.

The ink had hardly dried on KFC’s International Women’s Day list of women accelerating action towards gender equality in Africa when Zimbabwe’s Kirsty Coventry was elected as the new president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) – the first woman and the first African to hold the position. As a swimmer, Coventry won seven Olympic medals – including two golds – and competed at five Games. Before taking over at the IOC in June, she will relinquish her job as Zimbabwe’s Minister of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation, which she has held since 2018. Coventry was only 35 when she joined President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s cabinet, and she takes over the IOC at the age of 41. ‘Like many of the amazing individuals on KFC’s International Women’s Day roll of honour, she has proved that African women can do anything they set their mind to, regardless of age or gender,’ says Akhona Qengqe, General Manager of KFC Africa. ‘In Kirsty’s heyday as a swimmer, she fuelled the dreams of girls all over the world and now she’s doing the same for women all over Africa. There will be times when her job will be incredibly tough, and we wish her strength and resilience.’ KFC Africa extend our congratulations to yet another trailblazing African woman setting the stage for future leaders to come.

I was drawn to KFC because of Akhona Qengqe 's inspiring mission, which prioritizes empowering women. Hearing Nolo Thobejane story resonated deeply with me, and I felt genuinely seen and heard. I would like to express my gratitude to Akhona Qengqe and Nolo Thobejane for their tireless advocacy on behalf of women and their willingness to share their experiences. Their stories served as a catalyst for introspection, prompting me to reevaluate my own aspirations and realize that I had been limiting my potential. This reflection is particularly poignant in light of the stark reality that, according to the World Economic Forum (March 6, 2025), it will take approximately 134 years – or five generations – to close the global gender gap across key areas such as education, health, economic participation, and empowerment.
