We are proud to have co-hosted a roundtable on harnessing the Just Energy Transition for youth employment alongside the Open Society Foundations.
This gathering convened key stakeholders that are central to the #JET conversation in the country, including the National Parliament Speaker Thoko Didiza, Deputy Minister in the Presidency Nonceba Mhlauli, Open Society Foundation President Binaifer Nowrojee, Eskom Chairman Mteto Nyathi, Presidential Climate Commission Executive Director Dr. Chrispian Oliver and University of Pretoria Political Science Lecturer Dr. Sithembile Mbete, to name but a few.
The event also saw the launch of the UNDP JET report “Just Energy Transition from the Perspectives of Mining Communities” which served as a basis for an electrifying panel discussion that unpacked the complexities of #JET through multiple lenses and explored viable pathways to increased job creation, upskilling, attracting investments, advancing economic growth, and incorporating community views.
The groundbreaking report explores the views of over 10,000 South African respondents from key coal mining communities regarding the nation's shift toward cleaner energy sources. It emphasises the need for continuous health impact assessments, support for local entrepreneurship, and policies that will ensure economic resilience for communities impacted by the transition from coal.
In closing, the UNDP South Africa Resident Representative, Maxwell Gomera, officially handed over the #JET report to the Open Society Foundation President Binaifer Nowrojee, Deputy Minister in the presidency Nonceba Mhlauli, and the speaker of the National Assembly Thoko Didiza, calling for action and showing UNDP’s contribution creator of critical dialogue platforms and an integrator of key stakeholders towards the country’s development.
