As part of the V&A Waterfront's Our Better Nature campaign, we’ve partnered with Twyg, a platform dedicated to sustainable, circular, regenerative, and ethical living, to bring their Slow Fashion Festival to our neighbourhood. The fast fashion industry is one of the largest contributors to environmental degradation, from excessive waste to harmful production practices. This festival aims to raise awareness and inspire change, showing that together, we can create a more sustainable future for fashion. Out in the ocean, creatures that like to feed on jellyfish often swallow tattered bits of plastic bags trailing in the water because they confuse them with their favourite food. This can be a cause of death for marine animals, especially turtles, alerting us to the deep need to preserve and protect sea life by preventing pollution and reducing plastic waste. This makes the giant jellyfish sculpture formed out of plastic and other waste materials - that is part of the Our Better Nature art route at the V&A Waterfront - all the more relevant and poignant. But it also alerts us to how ingenious we can be when we put our minds to solving the problem of waste. Conceptualised by artist Michael Methven, his studio brought the sculpture to life by cleverly reusing a range of materials including rope offcuts, plastic piping offcuts and roll ends, end-of-roll fabrics and paper pulped from household waste. To make it all safe and sturdy, recyclable stainless steel provided the framework to carry the weight of the piece. The end result is fantastical and transporting, don’t you agree? The aim of the Our Better Nature installations is to inspire us all, because when we act from our better nature, nature gets better. We invite you to share your own sustainability efforts with us before 30 August 2024 and you could win a V&A Waterfront gift card valued at R2 000! Click here: https://lnkd.in/d9nVKjKj Come and engage with this magical jellyfish installation and then take a turn past the Two Oceans Aquarium to view the live jellyfish that inspired its creation. #ourbetternature #sustainability #upcycling #recycling #waste #art #vandawaterfront

With the aim of opening up better ways of doing things, we’ve reached out to the makers behind the Our Better Nature installations that are currently on display at the V&A Waterfront. They form part of a nature-inspired, immersive art route that expresses our neighbourhood’s ongoing commitment to pioneering sustainable innovations.   Chatting to Tapiwa Patrick Zvanyanya of African Arts in Hout Bay, who created the gorgeous and ever-so-lifelike fish and seal sculptures, we discovered that he looks to pictures and videos of real animals for his inspiration. He then makes a frame out of galvanised wire, which is then clad with metal from discarded coffee pods.   “I source the used coffee pods from a number of places. A few locals drop them off here at my studio in Hout Bay and I also collect them at the scrapyard. The coffee inside the pods is already used, so I tip that out and use it for compost,” he explains. He then uses a rubber hammer to flatten the pods before creating the overlapping layers that are applied to the wire frame, making wonder from waste in the process.   We salute this feat of upcycling ingenuity that speaks to Our Better Nature! Inspired? Keen to share your own efforts in shaping a greener tomorrow? We’re interested in hearing about the sustainability efforts you practice at home, in your community, or at your business. Let us know via this quick online Pledge form before 30 August 2024 and you could win a V&A Waterfront gift card valued at R2 000: https://lnkd.in/d9nVKjKj   #ourbetternature #sustainability #upcycling #recycling #waste #art #vandawaterfront
