The competition for attention in today’s media landscape is immense, with audiences being drawn not only to rival sports leagues but also to a wide range of entertainment options. To stand out, the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) was eager to redefine its traditional image and appeal to a broader, more diverse audience by amplifying its energy, drama, and elite athleticism. “Since 1973, the WTA has been breaking boundaries,” says Isabel Maguire, Senior Strategist at Nomad Studio. More Studio’s rebranding of Melbourne’s Curry Cafe offers a masterclass in authentic cultural storytelling. Creative Director Matthew J Tambellini crafted the identity following travels where he documented vernacular design across India and Central America, incorporating genuine elements—vibrant colours, typography reminiscent of Indian bus signage, and phrases from actual establishments like ‘Enjoy Lassi,’ ‘Number One Best Quality,’ and ‘Stay Spicy.’ The studio deliberately chose Tamil over Hindi, challenging Australia’s tendency to conflate Punjabi cuisine with all Indian food. Typography married Archive from Colophon Foundry with a bespoke wordmark mirroring Indian bus lettering, while the colour scheme drew from Parsi Irani café menus and Central American painted doorways.
