Our Women@Bates group hosted a design challenge that tackled social issues critical to our understanding of inclusive citymaking for women. It was a powerful discussion that led to some compelling design ideas about how we can make a difference. #WomenAtBates Bates Smart Here’s What We Talked About: 1. Safer Workplaces – Making job sites more inclusive, especially in male-dominated industries. 2. Safer Public Spaces – Designing for better visibility, accessibility, and security. 3. Systemic Change Beyond Design – Pushing for policy shifts, cultural transformation, and leadership diversity. 4. Women in Construction – How tech, prefabrication, and inclusive hiring can open more opportunities. 5. Health & Wellness – Designing spaces that support mental and physical well-being. 6. Collaboration Across Sectors – Bringing together design, policy, and technology to drive change.

Wentworth Quarter is a new build-to-rent community in Wentworth Point, including 200 apartments and eight townhouses. The waterfront site is the first stage of a masterplan that extends from Hill Road to the foreshore. Two L-shaped buildings are organised around a landscaped courtyard, while a 30m-wide foreshore provides new public open space. Buildings step down in height to reduce overshadowing to the foreshore, maximise views over Homebush Bay and deliver apartments with large, landscaped terraces. Facades are facetted, opening apartment views to the water. A two-storey foreshore element accommodates the townhouses, where living spaces are cleverly planned to optimise outlook. 140 William Street is one of Melbourne’s most celebrated examples of modernist architecture and recognised by the Victorian Heritage Register for its significance. The current refurbishment presented a valuable opportunity to restore non-original areas of the ground plane and introduce a new café pavilion that complements the original architecture. Our approach, with client Rest, has been both considered and restrained, ensuring that this significant building remains true to its distinctive form while also evolving as a next generation workplace environment.

MAC Residences exemplifies how excellent apartment living can be defined, as Sydney positions itself to become a high-density city. It is the first building to complete in the new Midtown MacPark neighbourhood by Frasers Property Australia. The tower stands at the neighbourhood’s highest point and serves as a gateway to the future precinct. Its calm expression, efficient floorplan and clever ground level interface set a high bar for Midtown MacPark’s 23 remaining buildings that, once built, will form a new high density mixed-use, mixed-tenure community.
