FUNDRAISING FOR THE KIDS | Every day the Children's Cancer Institute is in pursuit of Zero Childhood Cancer. We are proud to have participated in CCI’s CEO Dare to Cure event across Sydney and Melbourne, to raise money for childhood cancer research. Our team took part in the event by walking on glass and fire, bathing with snakes and more, to get out of their comfort zones for the cause. Our team has set up donation pages, with all proceeds going to CCI. There is still time to donate – follow the links to donate if you can, help us reach our target, helping to fund research for childhood cancer. Tara Veldman GAICD Veldman – https://lnkd.in/gA9p4Z2r Cameron Frazer GAICD Frazer – https://lnkd.in/gJu7REpz Peter Cowlinghttps://lnkd.in/grRYpUeM BLP has raised over $100K for this cause over the last 3 years, in support of CCI and their incredible team. We are proud to be the lead architect on the new Sydney Children’s Hospital Stage 1 & Minderoo Children’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre, in Randwick, NSW. A life should be long. Support now if you can. #childrenscancer #cancerresearch #donatetocancer #designforahealthylife

  • WAF 2024 | Since 2008, the World Architecture Festival (WAF) has been the global stage where architects, designers, and urban thinkers gather to showcase their innovative projects, exchange ideas, and discuss the future of architecture. Mark Mitchell, Principal & Health Sector Lead at BLP, and Paul Curry, Director at COX, will present the new Footscray Hospital, a finalist in the @worldarchfest Awards (Future Projects – Health), and the role it serves beyond its function as a medical facility. The hospital and surrounding precinct will become an important communal asset that embodies the spirit and dedication of those who surround it. Whilst a hospital first and foremost, it will also be a catalyst for change, supporting a broader health, education, research and community precinct. As the architectural landscape evolves, it's inspiring to see such a diverse array of talent pushing the boundaries. With projects like Footscray Hospital, we’re not just shaping buildings, we’re creating spaces that enrich communities, foster well-being, and drive progress. It’s a reminder of the incredible impact architecture can have on the lives of individuals and the vitality of entire regions. This year the World Architecture Festival is in Singapore from November 6-8, at the Marina Bay Sands. Best of luck to all entrants! PAEDIATRIC DESIGN | Construction of both facades has begun, marking new milestones for Sydney Children's Hospital Stage 1 and Minderoo Children's Comprehensive Cancer Centre (SCH1/MCCCC) and the Paediatric Services Building (PSB) at The Children's Hospital at Westmead (CHW). Both designed by BLP, the natural surroundings of the Randwick and Westmead areas inspire the colourful and textured façades of the new hospital buildings. Read more about the nature-inspired façade design for these buildings below, which are expected to be completed at the end of 2025. #paediatricdesign #kidshospitals #architecture #facadedesign #designforahealthyworld Article link https://lnkd.in/ghK9Zcm8

Redevelopment Lead, Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network

The façade design of both the new hospital buildings have been inspired by nature.    Billard Leece Partnership has been at the forefront of the design, working hand in hand with our builders, John Holland and Roberts Co to execute the design.   The calming tones of Sydney's east sand cliffs, ocean and wetlands inspire the façade panels on the new hospital building at Randwick.    The Sydney Children's Hospital Stage 1 and Minderoo Children's Comprehensive Cancer Centre will have 2,500 panels in 39 different pastel colours selected to tell the story of Randwick's diverse landscape.    Feedback from Aboriginal community members highlighted the importance of nature interacting with the materials through shadow, wind and shade.   At Westmead, the facade design responds to the three waterways that converge near the hospital, including Toongabbie and Darling Mills Creeks, which connect to form the start of the Parramatta River.   The waterways hold great significance for the Aboriginal community. The Burramattagal, a clan of the Dharug people were the first settlers along the upper reaches of the Parramatta River.   The 14-storey Paediatric Services Building, as part of The Children's Hospital at Westmead Stage 2 redevelopment, will use multi-coloured folded metal panels to mimic the reflective qualities of the water.   Both designs are committed to our local Aboriginal culture and creating something special for patients, families, and staff. • VICTORIAN HEALTHCARE WEEK | Now in its twelfth year, Victorian Healthcare Week Expo brings together leading healthcare professionals from Australia and beyond. On October 16-17, more than 2000 people will attend the event in Melbourne. This year, Mark Mitchell, Principal and Health Sector Lead at BLP, will be speaking alongside Julia Beckingsale of #VictorianHealthBuildingAuthority and Paul Curry of Cox Architecture. The team will discuss their approach to co-designing with consumers and stakeholders on the New Footscray Hospital Project. The $1.5b project is being delivered as a public private partnership (PPP) by Plenary Health, in partnership with the Victorian state government and Western Health. Whilst a hospital first and foremost, the new Footscray Hospital will be a catalyst for change, supporting a broader health, education, research and community precinct. The level of community engagement during the initial stages of the design will ensure that the hospital becomes a significant piece of placemaking in the city. This year’s official theme is ‘It is Time to Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace’. As architects and designers who work in the health sector we are keenly aware of the importance of mental health for our clients. INSPIRED BY NATURE | The exterior of the new 14-storey Paediatric Services Building (PSB) at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead (CHW) will be a bright centrepiece within the Westmead Health Precinct.   BLP has led the facade's design, responding to the three water ways that converge at Westmead. The Toongabbie Creek and Darling Mills Creek connect to form the start of the Parramatta River, just a short walk from the hospital.    Consultation with local Aboriginal community representatives, SCHN and BLP took place with Dharug community members and Executive User Groups to understand how the river narrative resonated with community and staff.     The creeks and rivers hold great significance for the Aboriginal community. The Burramattagal, a clan of the Dharug people were the first settlers along the upper reaches of the Parramatta River. They have a strong connection to the river, using it to catch fish, eels, and other types of food.    The building is designed to maximise views, natural light, and patient amenities while ensuring privacy for patient rooms. The PSB will include single-patient bedrooms and dedicated carer zones, allowing parents and carers to remain with children while they are in hospital.    The PSB recently reached its highest structural point, with construction expected to be complete by the end of 2025.      "For patients, our goal is to ignite curiosity, wonder, and joy, providing a positive distraction during their hospital stay. Overall, we envision a joyful, fun, and colourful children's hospital," said Mr Turcinov.  For more information about the redevelopment visit https://lnkd.in/gmKsrYwQ #Health #HealthSector #HealthcareArchitecture #DesignForAHealthyWorld #BillardLeecePartnership

Our very own Kiri Collins Collins, Head of Built Environment & Infrastructure at Children's Cancer Institute, together with Bettina Bartos, Principal and Science + Technology Sector Lead, at Billard Leece Partnership have presented their insights on the topic of sustainability in hospital laboratories at the I2SL Annual Conference and Technology Fair in the USA. I2SL: International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories is the world's leading international conference focusing on energy efficiency and sustainability in laboratories and other high-tech facilities. Over three days, participants attend technical sessions, network with peers and visit cutting-edge laboratories. Kiri and Bettina described how the UN Sustainable Development Goals have informed the design of the Minderoo Children's Comprehensive Cancer Centre (MCCCC) – a state-of-the-art facility which brings together research, clinical care, and education – setting new benchmarks in healthcare and research. This cutting-edge project will embed laboratories within the hospital to foster faster medical advancements and improve patient care. It's brilliant to see the MCCCC being recognised on this global stage in acknowledgement for the way this project has made sustainability a priority within a hospital laboratory environment. Congratulations and thank you to Bettina and Kiri for representing this project so wonderfully.
