Katrina Fiumani is an Environment and Sustainability Graduate who identifies as neurodiverse. At John Holland, Katrina says she's found a place where she can be herself and excel at her work. We're really pleased to be highlighting some of the talented people with disabilities who are doing great work at John Holland. We'll continue to tell these stories over the next few weeks. [🎥 Video description: A woman is pictured sitting in an office environment, speaking to camera and telling her story, smiling. Various scenes of the woman follow, including on a Teams call with colleagues, outside taking water samples in small testing bottles and doing noise level testing using measuring tools on another worksite. The final images are of her back in the office and smiling to camera.] #JohnHollandTransformingLives

Did you know that Sydney relies on rainfall for over 85% of its water supply? 💧 The Sydney Desalination Plant Pty Limited at Kurnell is currently the only rainfall independent source of drinking water for Greater Sydney. It provides resilience for our water supply system during extreme weather events including floods and droughts. The plant first started operating in 2010 and can supply up to 250 million litres of drinking water a day - that’s the equivalent of more than 100 Olympic swimming pools or about 15% of Greater Sydney’s drinking water needs. The desalination process draws water from the ocean and transforms it into high-quality drinking water. Unlike rivers and dams, the amount of seawater in oceans isn't affected by changing rainfall. For decades, countries around the world next to oceans have been using desalination to treat seawater. Powered 100% by renewable energy, the plant uses a reverse osmosis membrane process to remove salt and other minerals to turn seawater into drinking water. The salty water left behind is carefully returned to the ocean. The Sydney Desalination Plant plays an important role in supporting our water supply, reducing pressure on our water filtration plants. The plant has been running continuously since 2019 to help address water quality issues arising from bushfires, flooding and significant maintenance work in our supply network. #desalination #watersupply #sydney #sydneywater

As Indigenous Business Month continues, so is our mission to highlight the Indigenous business partners we work with on delivering complex infrastructure for communities across Australia. Borger Cranes is one of those partners. 🏗️ A trusted contractor on a number of our eastern states projects, Borger Cranes has the capability of an extensive crane fleet that can cater for lifting applications ranging from 3 tonnes to 750 tonnes. With National Code Compliance, our Project Managers regularly recommend the high-quality outcomes provided on the job by Borger. "I'm constantly citing my experience with Borger as an example to others in the hope it changes perceptions about what First Nations businesses may be capable of," said Queensland Building project Manager Jeff Lacoste. Its exhibitions feature images of some of the most iconic Australians, so it's only fitting that the National Portrait Gallery is one of the nation's most iconic buildings! 🏛️ Completed in 2008, the National Portrait Gallery is the most significant building constructed in the Parliamentary Triangle in the past 20 years. ✨ The gallery's striking off-white "bush-hammered" concrete finish was achieved by the John Holland project team using a refined method of shot-blasting, designed to match some of the finishes on neighbouring structures. 👩🎤🎨 The gallery features portraits of everyone from actress Deb Mailman to Denmark's Princess Mary and is visited by around half a million people a year! We hope they enjoy the building as much as the art! We're proud of the work we've done over the past 75 years of delivering cultural institutions and public spaces. #JohnHollandTransformingLives #JohnHolland75 #JHPastPresentFuture

We’re proud of the way our people help other Aussies in times of need, and Nigel Ferguson is a great example of this. 🌪️ When Cyclone Jasper hit Far North Queensland in December 2023, widespread flooding caused heavy vehicle access to be cut off from the Atherton Tablelands and north to Cape York. Nigel, then based in Cairns as a Senior Supervisor on the Edmonton to Gordonvale project (E2G), called off his annual leave and rallied his John Holland and subcontractor colleagues to help get the Palmerston Highway reopened, allowing vital supplies to get through to some of the worst-hit areas. 🚧 E2G was a complex project which included duplication of 10.5km of the Bruce Highway to four lanes, new service roads, relocating 4.4km of Queensland Rail Line, two new level crossings, and relocating and constructing 8.8km of cane rail. The project was completed on time and under budget in late 2023. 🤵 Nigel was named John Holland employee of the year at our annual awards last week for this act as well as his day-to-day professionalism, kindness, and attention to safety. 🏆 The awards are held to recognise the many John Holland people who go above and beyond every day. #JohnHollandTransformingLives #JohnHollandEmployeeOfTheYear

👷🏻♀️ When a group of female junior engineers from across Victoria's Big Build program were brought together by the Level Crossing Removal Project for an eight-day training program, they never expected to be given a job like this. 💣 Their mission: to build a replica scale model train station from scratch using supplies leftover from the Pakenham Level Crossing Removal Project - all in three days! 🏗️ Titled 'Constructionarium', this hands-on training was designed to give participants the opportunity to see a whole project through from concept and design through to real-world delivery: something they say will prove to be a game changer so early in their careers. And did they deliver? Watch the video to find out! 🚇 Did you know our CYP Design & Construction team working on the new Sunbury to Pakenham line for Melbourne's Metro Tunnel Project has completed major construction of the third of the five underground Metro Stations? Anzac Station is being hailed as the 'Pavilion in the Park' because it connects with surrounding existing parklands. The station will significantly improve access to the St Kilda Road precinct and key Melbourne landmarks, reducing pressure on the road and tram network to the south of the CBD. The new line also means passengers will be able to travel all the way from Sunbury to Cranbourne or Pakenham without changing trains 🙌🏿 Here's a glimpse at what the new station looks like - we think you'll like it! 👇🏽 For more updates head to https://brnw.ch/21wNJzL #JohnHollandTransformingLives #MetroTunnel #AnzacStation

It all came down to planning for our NSW overhead wiring team who recently completed complex overhead wiring upgrades for Sydney Trains. 🚆✨ Working with Sydney Trains and drawing on our specialist engineering capabilities in overhead wiring, along with our expertise in temporary works and complex lifts ensured the team could complete the works within the weekend shutdown on the network. 🛠️🔧 More than 80 overhead wiring specialists from across our NSW team, supported by our New Zealand and Victorian teams, came together to: 🚧 Carry out critical dual lifts with a 150-tonne crane and a hi-rail crane to remove the existing structures 🏗️ Remove a life-expired 25-metre-long overhead wiring gantry 🌉 Reconfigure the existing overhead wiring through a complex section of the Sydney Trains network. The collaboration of the team ensured they were consistently ahead of program during the possession, and during the last two shifts, our specialists overhead wiring crew jumped in to assist with a wiring rebuild on an adjoining worksite. These critical works will help maintain reliability of the Sydney Trains network to keep people moving. 🚉 #JohnHollandTransformingLives #ItsAJohnHollandJob #JohnHollandRailAndTransport

We were delighted to host the NSW Minister for Regional Roads and Transport, the Hon. Jenny Aitchison MP, along with the The McKell Institute Institute, for a productive boardroom lunch at the John Holland Sydney Office yesterday. The event focused on three key topics that are close to our hearts: 🏗️ M1 Black Hill-Tomago Project: We had the opportunity to highlight the incredible work our team is doing to enhance capacity in the construction sector through pre-employment programs and local employment in the region. Our three-week pre-employment program is targeted at First Nations and new-to-industry workers and equips participants with real skills to get great jobs in construction! 👷♂️👷♀️ 🏘️ Building Resilient Infrastructure: With the increasing frequency of extreme weather events, it is crucial to ensure that our infrastructure is resilient and can withstand any challenges thrown its way. We engaged in insightful discussions on how we can construct projects that are better equipped to handle these future events and help keep communities safe. 💪 🌱 Energy Transition: As advocates for sustainable development, we firmly believe in delivering the energy transition with minimal disruption to the regional road and transport network. It was a fantastic opportunity to exchange ideas, collaborate with industry leaders, and contribute to the future of our sector. We are grateful to the NSW Minister for Regional Roads and Transport and the McKell Institute for their valuable insights and support. For 75 years, John Holland has been transforming lives – and it's hard to think of a building more life transforming than a new hospital 🏥. John Holland's history of building hospitals and critical health infrastructure began in the Top End in 1979, with Darwin's Casuarina Hospital. Construction was originally planned to begin in 1974 – the year that Darwin was decimated by Cyclone Tracy. After supporting Territorians in the aftermath of Australia's deadliest cyclone, John Holland got to work on the Casuarina Hospital in 1976, ahead of it opening in 1979. Since then we've built or upgraded hospitals right across the country, including the Perth Children’s Hospital, the Calvary in Adelaide, Australia's first dedicated cardiac facility, the Victorian Heart Hospital, and Stage 1 of Logan Hospital in Queensland. Today we have more than $3 billion worth of health infrastructure projects underway. We're proud of the role we're playing in keeping people safe and healthy 🙌😊. #JohnHollandTransformingLives #JohnHolland75 #JHPastPresentFuture
